Seriously Smithy that will never happen. Umpires have been abused from day 1 and will continue to do so no matter what happens, unfortunately for them this is part of the game. The good umpires seem to deal with it quite well, if they are confident in their abilities as an umpire and are good they can give back as much as they get, nothing stops an abusive player in his tracks when he hears from the umpire "i'd just worry about getting a kick mate and leave the umpiring to me", the odd threatened "send off" has been known to work also for repeat offenders.

I heard that one of the senior umpires from last year spat it or something and has taken off to another league (river murray maybe?) and taken a few umpires with him, so apparently they're gonna struggle all year..

Yeah thats right Smithy it Micky Taylor the umpires coach. He has gone to the Hills footy league. A big loss to the SFL. Also has taken a lot of umpires with him.

Yeah I know it will never happen MEx.
It's just food for thought for some of the serial abusers that you find on and off the field.
Are the overly abusive people the first to complain there is a lack of umpires ?
Will they give it a go themselves when the league is calling for numbers?
Hopefully something can be done to bring the numbers back up.

Postby Injured Phantom » Thu Apr 17, 2008 5:42 pm

A year or two ago, after realising my body had given up playing footy, i went out to the umpires to stay involved on match day & try regain some fitness.

I did a few games but quit mid-season (mainly) due the environment out there (some of them probably thought I was an arrogant turd with an attitude problem). The group are split too much with many field umpires walking around like they are bigger than the game but not inviting to new people who may threaten their status, and not enough encouragement from a large number towards the kids. Don Cooper the boundary coach was super but got a job in the SANFL. Having said this, there were a few blokes who sacrificed their own time to help & guide the kids.

They are short of numbers with most field umpires doing multiple games on a saturday & sunday. They do though need to get rid of some old heads. I wouldnt go back out there in any hurry! The money is ok, but much better doing something for nothing for my old club than for them.

Good luck to the jaffa crew in recruiting

Is everyone aware of the new rule this year that every club has to have umpires from within there club that have been accredited through a training session from the SFL. If you dont get supplied an umpire and the home club doesnt have an accredited umpire to fill in then the game will be abandoned and the home team forfeits the match.

Asking for trouble. Seen some close games in lower amateurs (Reserves) are decided by cheating umpires supplied by clubs. Remember a trial last year against a local club and the umpire sent 1 of our better players off with the most minor blood rule that could have been fixed on the spot and it was argued with him and his reply was "Your players probably have aids". Lovely I thought.....

Does anyone know why these umpires "spat it" and took off to another league? Do the Hills/GSFL leagues pay more $$$? Or does the SFL have a particularly bad reputation for umpire abuse etc??

I would have thought that the umps unfortunately would have copped the same sort of stick no matter what league they went to? But if they left the SFL for reasons like player/crowd abuse or pay surely its something the SFL should look at fixing, as asking clubs to find "another" volunteer, then asking them to go thru the SFL accredited umpire course then to call the odd game isnt the way forward.

It does open up a can of worms if a game is decided by a close call from a teams umpire. Creates doubt in everyones mind!
