Dr.Who's Daleks vs Star Trek's Borg

Postby Mr66 » Tue Apr 15, 2008 9:20 pm

Once again my workplace pondered the big questions confronting humanity.
Who'd win?
Why?
If one person does it, it's insanity. If millions do it, it's religion.

Ever since the daleks worked out how to climb stairs, they've been head and shoulders (well... eye stalk and turret) higher than any other alien race in the universal domination stakes.

Ooooooh...not easy...Jean-Luc was damn sexy as Locutus...but I think the new model, levitating Daleks just sneak into 1st place now.

I have absolutley NO knowledge of either so enlisted the help of the RAA technical department (not really  )
I too, posed the question to some of the blokes who work with me and they came to the conclusion that Borgs would win because the Daleks can't climb stairs.

Someone better tell that to this dalek:

Besides, real daleks don't climb stairs. They just level the building. 8)

Hmm, I've started WWIII in here.

As it so happens, I stumbled upon a newie who happens to have one of these Dalek thingys on his desk, so I figured he must be an expert.. here's what Michael had to say...

Daleks fly!!!! They can also fly through space (no need for ships - except for initial transport)

Daleks have greater fire-power - individual cunning (rather than a group mind), greater manoeverability, greater protection (It takes a hell of a lot to destroy one)

oh - and just to annoy the Trekkies - the Borg are just second-rate rip-offs of Cybermen anyway!!!!

I'll see if I can cut and paste the whole converstion on here.. bloody hilarious, I'm just wondering when we're gonna get in trouble for clogging up the system with non-work related emails

Oh dear.. more of the great debate from the Dalek expert..the Borg supporter (whose surname happens to be Borg  )

but the collective consiousness is more powerful THAN individual cunning, that's the point...they're more adaptive...they'd get one MAYBE two shots from their pittiful lasers...then the Borg adaptivity kicks in...then no more lasers....the Borg even have an impressive voice...unlike the grating of Daleks (that is the Di-ah-lekts, lol)

the Borg can walk....even upstiars... greater manoeverability

adaptive shielding... greater protection

and they'd be able to inject their nano-bots to screw up ALL the Di-ah-lekts...

and they may be rip-offs...but they've surpassed those that were their image... so NER!

They wouldn't get close enough to Daleks to assimiliate - They'd be wiped out before they could try...

As I said - Cybermen wanna-be's

and to quote the Daleks:

"One Dalek is enough to detroy 100 Cybermen"

Be very interesting to see if a Wraith would reek havoc on a star trek ship
Or if they could get past a Daleks metal skin or if a Gaould could take over the body of a Dalek.

but wait! There's more!

Individual thought is and has been far more important than a group mind... That's why everything from "1984" down has stressed the value of thought and self-control over a group mentality...that's what makes the Daleks superior - they don't rely solely on the command from the group....Collective consciousness is a weakness - not a strength

They'd never get past the Daleks' tri-poly-carbonate shielding to assimilate them...
And Daleks can fly/float/atttack from the skies....more manoeverability than the Borg could ever hope for.

It has been theorized that the Borg were originally a humanoid species that became so dependent on technology that they eventually lost most of their "humanoid qualities and are now mostly machine" ("Information about the Borg"). Speculation is that the Borg essentially built themselves; in the process of trying to perfect their whole by using cybernetic enhancements, they permanently crossed the boundary between human and machine

The BBC should have sued!!

Never been much of a Dr Who fan, so I'm lost when it comes to Daleks.
So I'll nominate the Cylons from Battlestar Galactica as very worthy adversaries to anyone.

"Species 8472" appeared in Star Trek:Voyager and kicked the Borg's arse.

As already mentioned the Wraith and Goa'uld from the Stargate universe are tough mothers and there are also the Replicators.

Seen the first 2 eps of series 4 Wedgie? Awesome!

I personally reckon the Borg were the scariest villains ever when they first appeared with Locutus. As we saw more (too much) of them, including the Queen, it all became a bit camp. But initially they were way scary.

Always found the Daleks more comical than anything - gotta love the BBC effects department! - but Davros was another thing entirely. Very scary indeed

Thanks FC...those quotes have brought back some very happy memories of hours spent listening to aircraft techies having very very similar debates :D :D :D

If we're adding other aliens to the list then I vote....Clangers...no one ever kicked their butts...sometimes it's the low tech option thats best
