ANTHONY Banik may have been the most unsuccessful of all No. 1 AFL draft picks but he has certainly since found his niche — at lawn bowls. The Tigers' star choice of 1989, who was eventually delisted after only 49 league games, contested the Victorian state triples championship a few days back and came within a whisker of claiming one of the sport's biggest prizes, dropping the final on the very last end of the match.

Anthony Banik might have been an unsuccessful No 1 draft pick, but he was great at SANFL level.

He won West's B & F more than once, I think, including a win in the year Glenn Kilpatrick won the MM.

As well as that, he's a great bloke and certainly always gave 100% when he played for the Bloods.

In only 18 games Hutton became famous for two things - the helmet and 8 goals against Geelong in that record score match.

I think in terms of how he was rated as a youngster, its probably a reasonable call saying he was the msot unsuccesful #1. He incredibly dominated at junior level and was sort of expected to do teh same at AFL level.

Heres a blurb from a drafting website:

"Anthony Banik, the number 1 draft pick was one of the best credientialled junior footballers ever. He was an All-Australian under-16 while still only 14. If he hadn't been drafted by Richmond as a 16 year old he would have become the first person ever to represent a state in 3 Teal Cup under-17 tournaments. He was regarded as the unanimous number 1 selection. He made the all-Australian under-17 team despite missing the 9 weeks prior to the carnival with a knee injury. He was a state junior shotput and discus champion, and the nephew of Carlton premiership player Billy Bennett. However Banik was extremely mature and physicallly developed for his age group, and had very little improvement left in him. After 49 games at Richmond he was delisted and has since played in the SANFL. Banik serves now as a warning to recruiters to ensure that they recruit players with potential, not merely on the basis that they dominate junior competitions."

Definately Lounder was worse, but I dont think he was ever rated as highly as Banik was.

Woodside had been part of the merged Devon-Welshpool-Won Wron Woodside, known as the Allies, since 1997.
Banik had been on the committee for the past five years, last year as president.
This year is Woodside's centenary and officials decided to de-merge and join the new football league.

I thought the same CP but according to Wiki, Steven Sims went as the second draft pick that year (1986 first ever draft) , 2 picks before Anderson

Instead of going to the Saints in 1987 he signed with North Adelaide and never played VFL/AFL
