Anzac Day Tradition?

Postby Wedgie » Tue Mar 18, 2008 10:46 pm

Spelly, I was wondering if you could go back and show us who played at what grounds on as many Anzac Day games going back as far as possible and perhaps higlighting one's that are GF rematches.
Cheers.

In another post I mentioned that right up until 1997 I can only ever remember Port v Norwood.

I reckon it was only after 1998 that they started doing the GF finalists thing.

lets see what the mistro comes up with...

Pretty sure that Norwood v the Bays took place in 83 Chicky, if so, I'd suggest it was the case earlier and then perhaps got shelved for a little while?

Yeah I remember going to Norwood Oval in either the late 70s or early 80s for a game against Torrens and I also remember North playing Sturt or Central at Footy Pk on an Anzac Day in the 80s.

Yeah, come to think of it I reckon youre right..Wonder how it is then that if we all still thinking of the GF finalists theory, why Port played Norwood in 1997 then. shouldn't it have been Centrals?

I think the current tradition ( ) started the same time the dogs started their current run of GF's.

Now I'll wait for spelly to show me up as incorrect.

I think the current tradition would be the longest running, and if you also consider that AO is used in place of AAMI for nuetral games, the nuetral venue would be miles in front.

I think you'll find the tradition of leaving the programming as is for Anzac Day despite it being played between a variety of teams would be a longer standing tradition and one that goes back 100 years at least as opposed to one that doesn't even go back as far as last year.

So the GF rematch was on ANZAC Day (or holiday Monday) in these years:

1948, 1954, 1956, 1958-61, 1963-85, 1989, 1991, 1995, 1998-99, 2001-07

Cheers Spelly, exactly what I was after (well more or less, you can take out the holiday Monday one's if it wasn't on Anzac Day), more Anazac Day games have been played away from Adelaide Oval more than have been played there in my lifetime, so much for a tradition. .
They should make it Norwood v Port every year looking at the great crowds they've pulled.
Lots of non GF rematches at various ovals in there, they should return to that, also some thing they should take into account these days is not to play a team on the Anzac Day Friday if they've played the Sunday before when the other team is comingoff a bye, only common sense, mind you common sense and the SANFL are poles apart as we well know.

I think that the tradition was to start from 2001 and go on with it, to go back to the 1963-85 setup. I've got the Round 4 Budget from last year with an article about GF rematches on ANZAC day - those that were played on the Monday holiday were included too, but leaves out the 1989 match for some reason. It would have to be part of the SANFL/SACA relations (or lack of) that matches were played at West Lakes between 1974 and 1995.

Full rounds were played on the 25th of April in the following years: 1953, 1959, 1962 (three rounds were played in a week, ANZAC day was on the Wednesday between Rounds 1 and 3), 1964, 1981, 1987, 1992, 1998.

I watched a ton of SA footy from 66 - 80. I just assumed the ANZAC Day game had always been the previous years GF's. In fact - til now, I still thought it was the fact - but I've been away for a decade or 2!

I think you are twisting the stats to proove your point.

eg:

Games played at a nuetral venue (Adelaide and/or Football Park) Total- 69 games, 50 years

All other games played away from Footy Park or Adelaide (But there was a game at either one or both of them at the same time.)Total-25 games, 11 years

The only game played at a suburban venue when no game was played at Adelaide or Football Park (It's arguable as to whether Thebby was a nuetral venue or not, AO was certainly not avail to play on) Total- 1, 1 year

Thats 50 years of nuetral ground Anzac Day tradition compared to 1 year of questionable tradition.

Of course both this years and last years match would have been at Adelaide if it was/were made available. I'm not 100% sure, but I would say that last years match was meant to be a home match because the other two meetings were at Elizabeth.

The premier is considered the home team for all ANZAC clashes (in their current form at least).
