SAAFL _ LOCAL AREA DIVISIONS. We've got too much travelling

Postby Bagman » Wed Mar 12, 2008 11:13 am

Should the SAAFL look at 4 area divisions - North , South , West and Central , East and Central . ( Adelaide Uni. in both East and West ). The Highest Ranked 8 teams form the new Area Division 1 , The next 8 form div.2 and so on . This would bring back the local derbies and vastly reduce travelling time . ( Ask anyone involved at Flinders " The Crabs" Uni. about the away game at Angle Vale this year ! They'll need to leave the night before ! ) Also then have a 14 game home and away season followed by top 4 finals .Then a divisional Final Series < Giving ONE Club the prestigious Adelaide CHAMPION CLUB TROPHY ( maybe call it the BAGMAN TROPHY .. or something ) You Know it makes Sense . I'm The BAGMAN ..

Let me get this right...

You're suggesting that the likes of Port Districts should be put in the same division as North Haven, Portland, West Croydon and Rosewater for the sake of less travel.. Hmmm...

The trip from Angle Vale to Flinders is about the worst possible in Amateur league, isn't it?

Go play in the sticks, that's a short trip and they do it every week!

Would only have to travel any far distance maybe 4 times a year @ most for most clubs which IMO is no big deal !!!

The amount of travel currently is not that bad. But I wonder what the response would be from clubs like Angle Vale if the SFL folded and they had to travel to Aldinga. Much the same distance from the city centre.

While I agree that clubs in the country do it every second week, they can do the whole thing at 110 and don't need to travel through what is becoming an increasingly annoying bottleneck at 50. (the City)

the saafl tried it in lower divisions in years gone past - c grade north, south but didn't work as there's a preponderance of sides in the north and western areas meaning that some teams ended up out of their gographical area.

the roseworthy boys (adelaide uni) travel each and every week to play from roseworthy - including home games at park 10 (an hour's drive from roseworthy) so i'd just get used to it and perhaps organise a bus and make the trip part of the fun.

nice whine though.
always forgive your enemies...nothing annoys them so much

No Falcon Chick - The Top 8 teams make Div. 1 - Henley , Port districts , Woodville South , Aelaide Uni. , PHOS , Flinders Park ...and more would be in a Western Div. 1 ... then you'd have lower Divisions for the next bracket of 8 clubs ...and so on.

that was a good post bagman( never mind the negatives from people who live east and north of the city :) )..have a look at div 5 and imagine your kenilworth(5 mins from flinders uni)..we got plympton and a game at north adelaide swimming pool v BOS..every other game besides rosewater(on grand junction rd basically) is way over grand junction rd..we have players who wont play this year because of the "ins" to div 5..rosewater,ingle farm, golden grove and BOS..and i dont care how much they travel in the country..if your in the country you would realise you HAVE to travel..thats a given..SAAFL said yes in the last 10-15 years to so many leagues far north of the city that we now have this crazy situation..lets see how you would like it if we merged SFL into SAAFL and you have to travel from smithfield to christies beach(hypothetical)..i am all for a south and north comp with the 2 top teams for each division playing off for the flag..split the comp down torrens rd/lower NE Rd or similar..wont happen but it deserves discussion

Are people actually serious when they say its a long way to travel across Adelaide ? FFS !!!

Its pretty simple, if you dont like it, dont play. Sports like cricket and basketball all still involve travel. Be grateful its only Adelaide you have to travel across. A mate of mine coaches a junior basketball side in Melbourne, and they have to travel to Bendigo and Geelong some Friday nights. He does it because he loves the game.

C'mon guys, surely there are more pressing issues than this :?

I agree whilst it can be a tiny bit annoying to go to Houghton and now Gawler for Trinity in Div6 this format has been in for a while and we end up with very competitive divisions.

is this any less pressing than jeff the hotdog man?

show me a more lopsided grade in turf cricket than the present one in div 5..its a joke

we never asked for all the northern leagues to be brought into SAAFL..its only brought more travelling, more thugs and less fun..like i said..when SFL joins SAAFL lets see the northern teams cry like babies LOL..why do you think the SAAFL trialled north and south divisions in the lower grades?..because it IS a problem

Maybe you should complain on the Adelaide turf forum? Its only a problem if you make it one. Amatuer League take note that for now on before expanding make sure you run it past zedman 1st.

You cannot set up a division based on geographical area in Adelaide and expect it to be fair. Look at the SFL - huge discrepancies between the top and bottom sides.

Are you suggesting that the northern-suburb teams should get out of the SAAFL and form their own league ? Some of the SFL teams should be in the SAAFL, if you based it on where they are - Brighton, Marion, Morphettville Pk, Happy Valley. These sides are closer to the CBD than Smithfield and Trinity. But they want to stay in the SFL and good luck to them.

The current SAAFL grading works fine. I admit, the lower grades (C divisions) can be a problem, but thats a work-in-progress.
