Might want to go back and review Michael Clarke's performances over the whole series and particularly take into acount the situation he made a lot of his runs in. As for dropping Ponting, my god people have short memories. Lets not turn into England and go through 30 different players a year. The guy is a champion and form is temporary but class is permanent. Also did Gilly make a ton in a game that no other batsmen did much or was i dreaming that?
So we will go on for the next 5 or 10 years with ageing players who are out of form and not making runs, their JOB mind you, just because of past achievements, Gilly made a ton, 3 weeks ago, Michael Clarke did what he had to do as he should, and Ponting needs a rest or a reallity check

Unfortunately the level of performance that they have produced i the past makes people expect that level all the time but it is not achievable. The players playing on the whole are still the most capable and best players in the country. No group of youngsters is going to produce an equal or better result.

I agree with you Rod
I listed the ages to support my argument (maybe a Capt Obvious one) that there's a power-shift going on. While India is playing talented young kids, most of our options seem to be 30 or over. That doesn't mean we shouldn't play them (ie, drop them) - you can only use the playing list as it presents itself and no point cutting off your nose to spite your face.
Having said that, I think the selectors need to start balancing the desire for the short-term on-field success we have all got used to, against the need to ensure that in 5 years time we can field a competitive side. In fact, I am sure they are already doing this. But, if they are, its not showing in the team selection. Maybe its time to totally abandon the fringe players like (for example) Katich and Hodge who are 33 and instead blood some 25 year olds if there's a one-off available spot.
David Hussey is in the middle at age 31 and, as someone said (maybe you) he could go on for 5 years. But if he doesn't get a gig in the next 12 months then I ask the question are we better off blooding someone younger so we can start to build the team that will be on the park in 2015. A young player could do a lot worse than play with the likes of Ponting and Hussey to learn his trade at test level.
Do these younger test players exist? I'd be interested in the thoughts of Pup or REB or you Rod as I am not as close to the Pura Cup players.
