Either blood the youngsters (i.e. Cullen, Doherty, Hauritz), or don't bother with a front line spinner, and use M Clarke or Symonds/D Hussey (which ever one plays).

Whats wrong with McGain?

Doherty - not even close to consideration.
Hauritz - couldnt consistantly get any sideways movement on the ball even if the pitch was on a 45 degree slope.
Cullen - shouldn't be in the Redbacks team, let alone the national team.

McGain deserves his chance if he gets it. Had a very good season.

Dan cullen will be picked in the next test squad he hasent had a good season for wickets but has been bowling exceptionly well. he was propably gunna go there even if hogg didnt retire. the australian selection panel think the low slow wickets in pakistan and west indies will give him alot confidence.

The retiring Brad Hogg believes Dan Cullen and Nathan Hauritz will vie to be Australia's No. 1 limited-overs spinner in his absence, but he has no idea who should take the spot in Tests. Hogg, who is the incumbent after appearing in the series against India, would like a younger man to be given the chance in the five-day format.

What a load of rubbish.

Bryce McGain and Stuart MacGill are the best 2 spinners in the country by a mile. Cullen, Hauritz, Doherty and co are not in the same ball park at the moment. Selectors need to continue reward terrific performances in state cricket and that should be the case with Bryce. Cullen has been ok in the 50 over format, but has been terrible in the 4 day format. If people really think he is going to do well in Pakistan or the Windies then they are kidding themselves.

Shane Warne has also said that he thinks Bryce McGain is the answer to the spin troubles in Australia regardless of him being 37.

Pup, not that I have an opinion either way, but let's just remember that McGain is a Victorian and that would have a fair influence on Warne's thoughts. A very parochial man is Warney.

Bob Holland did alright at his age, didn't he? So they should give McGain a go. Put MacGill in there too and you have the Mac Attack.

Exactly. Its not like picking McGain at his age would be keeping a younger, as/more deserving player out of the team. Even if he just did the job for 12 months, it may be long enough for a younger player to step up to the plate. And thats assuming MacGill didn't return in the meantime.

His bowling has been very poor in the 4 day games this year. He doesn't even deserve his spot in the Redbacks 4 day team, let alone a national call up. Its not a case of him bowling well and not taking wickets, he's bowling pies.

It hasn't happened...yet...but what is Roy doing when Australia tour Pakistan? As for the second part of the equation, I'd say that Hogg and Gilly could have and probably should have played for another two years. Gilly is only 33 which is far cry from the ages of Warne and McGrath in particular.

Make no mistake the Baggy Green is being eaten away by the avaricous Indian Moth.

have you watched him bowl. SA and Australia are very happy the way they are coming out. it has been a pace bowlers summer this year on all Australian wickets in pura cup and tests.

look at what Dan has had to work with absolutely sweet FA. He has finally recovered from the massive loss in confidence by going to India for the Champions Trophy to be a net bowler. They took a punt with Warne to put him in the side its time to take a punt with DC.

REB, Gilly is 36.

Hogg is 37 and said he contemplated retirement after the world cup and only played on because Warnie had retired and so he thought he could play test cricket again. Which he did and maybe it was best he stuck with his first instinct

How often do Australian players go on until age 40? Steve Waugh about the only recent one maybe also Holland but not many ...

Not saying your conspiracy theory is all wrong - just that Gilly and Hogg aren't good examples IMO. Hogg hasn't even signed with IPL or ICL ..... (yet) ..

Roy has said the IPL has nothing to do with his Pakistan decision which has been a long term safety concern for him .... but its just his word I suppose so who knows?
In between signatures .....

Well if SA and Australia are happy with how he is bowling and think he is the next option then our spin bowling stocks then we are in big trouble.

Bryce McGain was the 7th highest wicket taker in Pura Cup taking 28 wickets, while the next 2 best spinners were Casson and Cullen with 15 and 14 wickets respectively. That shows the gap in the quality between the 2.

Everybody has also been harping on about Cullens Franger form, McGain is the leading wicket taker in that (Equal) with 15 wickets with an average of 24.4 while Cullen took 13 wickets at 28.30. So he is hardly been the best spinner in that form as everyone is claiming.

Age should not be the factor here, it should be quality, if we can get 12 months out of Bryce then that will give the next option another twelve months to develop whether that be Cullen, Bailey, Doherty, Casson, Hauritz or someone completely different. At the moment the only 2 spinners worth considering and they are MacGill and McGain.

Hogg has done very well as a ODI player, but I don't think his retirement will be causing panic to the selectors. I think Cullen has the potential to be a good ODI bowler and should get first crack. I think Australia have more to McGain by playing the 30-something leggy in the next Test series.

you people are all very hard on cullen (pup). if the SA batsman made more runs then cullen would have more of a target to bowl at.

Not hard on him, he is just not ready for International cricket yet and should not be selected.

When he does get picked or deserve selection i will be more than happy to change my tune and start blowing his trumpet like some people continue to do regardless of his form.

No, he's just not good enough at the moment. A red cap doesn't make you a cricketer you are not. McGain the better bet at the moment.

To be honest, Symonds is bowling well at the moment, and at this stage is the best spinner in the country. Maybe Bryce McGrain is an option, but Im not sure about that. I would say play David Hussey since our batsmen are struggling a bit of late. Also Hussey does give the option of an extra part time spinner. Symonds as the main spinner with his off breaks with support from D.Hussey. Then Clarke as the other spinner for variety. And that is the best spin combination that Aussie test side has at the moment. So the Aust team:

Hayden
Jacques
Ponting
M.Hussey
M.Clarke
D.Hussey
Symonds
Haddin
Lee
Clark
Johnson
Read my reply. It is directed at you because you have double standards
