This could easily turn into a contest to see who has the meanest, cheapest penny-pinching idea...

My entry:

When one of your chooks dies, shove your hand up it's bum to get that last final egg out of it. Then cook the corpse, of course.

Sell children to white slavers to work in salt mines. Especially when they insist on barracking for a different team to you.


On the serious note, the most obvious is just never ever buy petrol on a weekend.

Interestingly, Rog, the petrol station next to me was selling at $1.24 on the weekend and has gone up to $1.40 today. Doesn't always work that the weekend is more expensive.

always purchase fuel before wednesday lunchtime as thats when it goes through the roof, but it usually comes down by friday lunch

Another suggestion would be to buy an 'Entertainment Book' which not only raises funds for charity but also allows you to dine out for discounted prices.

Punky...maybe I'm just lucky but I've lived in a large costal village for 17yrs with a Co-Op supermarket that has been here a lot longer than I have but we still have 2 butchers, fishmonger, grocer, bakery, chemists and several other little family run shops and retailers. As far as I'm aware the supermarket hasn't put anyone out of business in fact the only ones that I can remeber closing down were due to retirement and bereavment.

Also our local town has 2 large 24hour supermarkets and 2 smaller supermarkets as well as a good mixture of high street and family run businesses and again they seem to survive well enough. Maybe a big part of the problem is also with the consumers abandoning the little guys.

JAS that might be the case where you are but here in Australia the big two in Woolworths & Coles have every finger in every greasy pie they can, this includes swamping the little bloke. One of the Current Affair shows (can't remember which one) subsidised a small operator fruit & veg shop with an in season fruit. The conglomerate went to any length to be the cheapest including selling at a loss whist the little bloke was still breaking even with the help of the network producers

Coles even swamped some of the big guys too, Bi-Lo and K-mart. Bi-Lo now branded Coles, and even now with coles typical poor service and empty shelves. K-Mart isnt the same anymore either. Theres other places that Coles own but haven't done anything with yet, but will no doubt in the near future.

I noticed that Foodland seem to have taken over a number of stores that used to be Bilo, The Bilo at the Modbury Triangle is now Romeo's Foodland and it seems to have improved quite significantly!

All Bi-Los are gone now, except for the one in Tea Tree Plaza, which is called Bi-Lo but is run by coles anyway. Didnt change name due to already having a Coles in the centre.

Ingle Farm shopping centre has two Coles' but one was originally Bi-lo. I think they are shutting one of them down though and changing it into another shop.

Which one are they getting rid of? Hopefully the old coles, as the Bi-Lo one is a lot better. The Bi-Lo one is only a few years old after they moved from where Bowland is now.

-Dont carry your ATM card with you,take out you're weekly allowance,and spend that,and that only.This can be difficult,but when you buy the paper and look at your wallett and know this is all you have,it makes you feel less inclined to get the juice,chewies etc etc.If worst somes to worst you can always ring home for a lift,or if a taxi is required pay for it when you get home.(Instead of thinking "Ill need $30 for a cab" and getting $60 out the ATM)

Apparently they are getting rid of the old coles. Not sure what they are going to replace it with but i heard they were extending K-mart. I would prefer it if they didn't because i haven't shopped at K-mart for years and it would just be pointless because the store is quite large as it is.

Increase your mortgage payments by 10% above what you have to a week. When the interest is debited once a month, pay it off out of your savings. Mr MK and I are getting the principal down fast in this manner.

Pasta - order a main course size, eat half and take the other half for lunch tomorrow (for those on the smaller tummy side).

Buy lunch stuff from the supermarket and store at work to make sandwiches, toast, etc.

Catch public transport.
