Your single greatest piece of play of all time!!!

Anything to do with the history of the SANFL

Michael Aish's burst down the wing in the 84 Grand Final.

Cornes's clutch mark and goal in the 73 Grand Final.

Buff Tyrrell's mark and goal v Port at Woodville Oval in 76 (and the Mike Coward piece in The Advertiser on the Monday).

Roger Clift's checkside goal on the run v West at Richmond in 84.

Less spectacular but - Ralph Sewer streaming in to goal at the golf course end v Port in the 86 1st Semi (purely for the imagery).

Malcolm Blight's torpedo in the bog at Woodville Oval v Sturt in 84. Nearly as good as "that" goal at Princes Park.

And sorry to sully this with an AFL flavour - I saw Chris Judd snare a ball straight from a centre tap, take a couple of bounces in a beeline to the goal and score against Richmond a couple of years ago. The most efficient piece of football I've ever seen. 3 seconds tops.

Speaking of Michael Aish - never forget the '87 Qualifying Final when, hampered with an arm in plaster (IIRC) he sat in the goal-square and kicked five goals...

In terms of Judd, I reckon it was 03, his 2nd year, up at the Gabba, in 2 minutes he snared the ball at a tap, weaved past 4 players and goaled from 40 in the same fashion twice in 2 minutes. I reckon everyone that watched that either live or at tv would have been shaking their head in disbelief

Was that the game when he kicked five goals in the first half?

Almost single-handedly blew Brisbane out of that game.

No mean feat considering the Lions - and its champion midfield - was still at its peak...

After coming back from a broken neck and being allowed to sit on the bench in that last game so he could get his 200th and life membership (he was in no fit state to play), he came onto the ground in the last quarter and caught a Woodville player holding the ball in the goal square. Jumped up and down and shook his fists with joy before slotting through the goal. For that small moment all else was forgotten and I will never forget that piece of play.

Agree - even as a neutral that was still a magic moment of SANFL.

Yes brilliant!

And although we lost the game, in the 2006 Elim final J Clayton did the most amazing piece of evasion to miss being tackled by three South players after unsuccessfully contesting a mark (when he was the shortest in that contest) and then picked up the footy and slotted it without looking from about 45 degrees. And although only about 20m from goal it was THE BEST individual piece of play I've ever seen. He looked to have ages.

IIRC Macca kicked a pearler in the last quarter into the wind to get us back up and going ... Did the same in the 89 Elim v the Bays - Typical Macca, didn't always dazzle you with brilliance, but with Value and in the the clinches he was as good as any.

Slightly odd for the result, but in game at Richmond in 83 the Legs had pulled back a 5 goal deficit to take the lead deep into time on of the final quarter, in the final flurry Luders had a left foot snap checky from the boundary line which hit the post, an incredible kick that almost gave them back the points.

Tony McGuiness roving at full tilt in the 84 Prelim final and then checky goal on the run without breaking stride was the nail I thought was going to close our coffin that year (thankfully not :D )

Also in 83, as mentioned previously, THAT mark by Ray Huppatz, still one of the most incredible grabs I've seen live, along with Brenton Maynard v Centrals at the Parade in 88.

Chris Judd - thread of his own. His highlight reel and Jared Brennan's highlight reel for the first two minutes are the two best current in the game for stand out pieces of amazing play. It's just that Brennan's reel stops there after two minutes, while Judd's outstanding pieces of play stretch for about another 85 minutes.

On topic -
84 GF have two outstanding contenders for me in the Aish run and the Keith Thomas mark.
Also, a Graham Cornes mark at Norwood, where he won the game post-siren in the late 1970s, only because I was front at the fence, and mark was about 15m from us and I couldn't believe you could get that high.
However
I vote for a key Brian Adamson goal from the 78 GF in the third quarter (I think), after the ball is cleared from defence and charged up the ground without a Sturt hand touching it. (We hardly got an easy goal all day in that game).
Roger Woodcock -- 602 goals from a forward flank makes you a legend.

I thought Norwood supporters would vote for a piece of playing involving Des Foster circa September 1978 ;)

As far as umps go, When Robin Bennett (I Think?) kneed the irate Port fan in the crown jewells. Think it was Port Vs Norwood?? during the finals - definitely at Footy Park.

Paul McCormack's hit on Roger Delaney back in the late 90's resulting in Roger having his nose splattered across his face still sends goosebumps up my spine. Hardly a match winning piece of play but still for me one of my most memorable SANFL moments.

That was surreal - it was like it was only him and the football.

One Dad recalls is of John Duckworth taking a few bounces around the boundary at Thebarton in 1980 and slotting it through.

From me:
-Ben Hollands checkside goal in front of the Bradman stand in the 2001 State game.

-Quote from me on here from Round 19 2006:
I would put the 5-4-3-2-1 as Cicolella (what a goal by him in at the northern end when he brought the ball around beautifully after evading two Norwood players)

-How to effect a turnover without laying a hand on player or football (From Rd 17 2007):
I want to single out one bit of play for the match, this was by Dale Symmons. Just forward of the centre, grandstand wing, there were 3 Norwood players and him; ran up and put pressure on each player when they handballed, eventually one of them kicked the ball sideways, straight to Schwarze, he handpassed to Salter who goaled. Fantastic stuff.

-Ferret, describing for me in more detail of the lookaway kick - I can't recall seeing another bit of play like that (Rd 22 2007):
Spell_check......that passage of play from "Weekend" was sensational. You forgot to mention that Bernie was running towards the boundary and some how with his left foot managed to to do a left foot pass (60% hook) to Pass who was leading straight up the ground from FF. How he ever saw Pass and then managed to hit him on the chest was extraordinary.

Those stories remind me of Gilbert MacAdam, late '80s. It was at Football Park. Forget who Central was playing, but MacAdam had possession deep in the northwestern pocket. He was over the boundary line but holding the ball in play. Several opposition players charged at him in an effort to knock the ball over the line, but MacAdam casually sidesteped each one, managing to hold the ball inside the line in the process. When the last charge had missed, he simply took one steadying step inside the boundary, dropped the ball on his boot and split the centre at the northern end.

Surely one of you Central fans must have video footage of this?
