Other teams playing were playing as amateurs, what a load of sh!t dog.
You blokes can't give credit where its due.
Back in that era,it was a far better standard 2 what it is 2day.
Smith would sh!t all over the current CHF's.
When the standard was good, even Central's couldn't win a flag.
You could argue whether or not teams of today would beat teams in the 80s - I reckon teams of today would have the upper hand on fitness - but as someone who is committed to preserving and in a way promoting the League and its' history through my stats, I don't think anyone should try and downgrade any teams premierships (or multiple premierships) because of the V/AFL induced reduction of talent.
That goes for downgrading players, such as D.Smith..
Name me a more dominate CHF since he retired???????

GWW wrote:This is probably for another thread, but i think the premiership sides from mid 80's to around 1990 would beat the premiers of the last 15 years by at least 10 goals.
Look at those Port, Glenelg and North premiership sides, of the mid to late 80's, they were great SANFL footy teams.
Sturt 02 premiership side would have gotten beaten by their 88 side (who didn't win the premiership that year) - Dilena, the Russells, Whittlesea, Welsby etc etc.
Centrals premiership sides of this decade i think would have been beaten by Centrals circa 89 - McAdam, Lee, Bubner, Girdham, Mandemaker, Handley etc.
North's runners up this year would not have gotten within 15 goals of their 87 side - Jarmans, Hart, Bennett, Clisby etc etc
All very hypothetical i know, but an interesting point of discussion.

Mate, I never said I agreed with Psyber. In fact it's fairly unlikely I ever would. I just thought you could expand on your opinion, which you did.footballmagic wrote: Back in that era,it was a far better standard 2 what it is 2day.

I've never disputed that the SANFL wasn't better then, and never would.
But your comment "even Centrals couldn't win a flag" is humourous - I guess people have to find something to have a crack at us about, because they can't say "show us yer premierships" any more.
I guess that sort of comment suggests a worry about the Port Magpies' position in the world now.....take us back to the glory days eh?footballmagic wrote: That goes for downgrading players, such as D.Smith..

A) Darren Smith was a great CHF and while even I thought him to be a bit sqishy at times, I still feel that him and John Klug (imo) were the best in the league at the time.
B) No, there probably haven't been any as good since, as the structure of the game has changed so much in the last 15 years that a team is not so reliant on the the big guy who can mark a footy in that position anymore.
GWW , to a point I disagree with your theory of current premiership sides not getting within a bulls roar of their predecessors. (whilst I do see your point though)
It's just back then, the names were household and were probably revered (sp) more by the general public. Who are the blokes who play now?? Really??? But I can bet your bottom dollar the fitness, discipline and game style would surpass that of the average 1980's player. Unfortunatley, the game as a whole for the best part has become a bore to watch.... only for sanitization of the rules...

Without looking at the final 5 for that year, Sturt no doubt would have had Port, Glenelg, North and Norwood in front of them. Port, Glenelg and North had great sides around that time, Norwood as well. Sturt defeated Port in one particular game i recall at Footy Park (Johnston/Dilena incident). I still say the standard of that year/era was a fair bit above the current era.
