Poll time Skyhooks or Sherbet

Postby locky801 » Sat Dec 08, 2007 5:46 pm

Ok fellow SA footy lovers (more for the older ones like me I guess) went to a high school reunion during the week where the old debate resurfaced over Sherbet or Skyhooks, remember the days where it just about turned into punch ups in the yard or on the oval over who was the best, personally I couldn't separate them, love both there music only the get up of Skyhooks turned me off a little. any opinions

Skyhooks. No contest IMO. Greg McAinish wrote great rock and roll songs about Australian places whilst Sherbet were a lame soft rock band.

Agreed with most, Skyhooks by a country mile. Its like comparing Elvis to Shannon Noll.

Saw them at the Old Lion when the reformed in the 90s and Shirl belting out Women in Uniform will live long in my memory. The whole gig was fantastic but that song still gives me goosebumps when I think of how they belted it out.

No contest for me. Skyhooks by a decent torpedo. "Howzat" is still a great song, and "Summer Love" is good to have driving down The Esplanade, but still listen to the "Living In The 70's" album now and think how accurate a picture it was of Australia in that era.

Skyhooks - on the basis they have about 6-7 songs in the Ipod, and Sherbet don't have one. Also, just remember how much they used to upset my parents, and that counts for something too.

I knew who Skyhooks were when I was a kid. Which suggests something to me about the longevity of their music.
First song played on Triple J.
I have several of their albums, no Sherbet.

Skyhooks for me.

No contest.
Skyhooks sang about suburban life whilst other bands @ the time were
trying to sound like bad American/British knockoffs.
First OZ band to make me realise that this country had a viable music scene.

And if you were a guy that liked Sherbet, then you were a poof....

As I am a young fella (21), up until the last couple years i hadnt heard much of either except the song Howzat. But one day i was looking through the ol girls cd collection and stumbled across Skyhooks Greatest Hits. I must say i love em. Ive put all their songs onto my playlist on the comp and they get quite a workout.

wow what a response and mainly one way, back then it was one or the other almost got into school yard fights over which was best, over the years I have grown to appreciate the music of both, true what some have posted here some of the Hooks songs were great, have a filmclip on video of women in uniform done live and this girl (obviously over 18) gets into this huge condom with Shirl, comes out a couple of mins later, a tad undressed with a fair bit showing was an absolute classic.

But Wedgie Wedgie Wedgie, like comparing Elvis to Shannon Noll, and I thought you liked Elvis :D :D

Sherbet. Only because Shirl's voice was a bit of an acquired taste for the newly arrived kiwi girl circa 1974.

I was at that show and still rate it as one of the best gigs I've witnessed. They were awesome that night.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

Both shite in my books, guess they were a bit before my time. But definitely Skyhooks over those other mulleted dandies. If only for 'Shirl's Neighbourhood'.
