Certainly can see both sides to this one. Was given coin by my last club and it was at a time when very much needed - was working part time and only just paying the bills until that happened. Not a huge amount, but enough to pay the rent and a bit more each week, so it really encouraged me to put more into the place. It helped they were a good bunch of blokes, but given we finished near bottom that year, it wasn't like I was chasing success solely.

On the flipside, have seen plenty of players who, as someone said, walked in with 20 mins before game start, play a medium game, hold out their hand to the president at the end and then drive off - not putting a cent back into the club and not being seen again the next year. Mercanaries like that can be real trouble, but it comes down to the judgment of the coach and match committee with that one. Pick the right blokes that will stick around - married blokes with families tend to stay around, due to finding the right people to mix with at the end of the game. A number of wan*ers out there that are just in it for the money, no doubt, and these blokes won't help at all in the medium term, but there are also plenty who, for one reason or another, don't have the requirements of a 9-5 job, commit fully to something they ARE very good at, and try their best.

Some blokes who get the coin are genuinely good guys who really dont do it for the money. Keith Allan who played for Goolwa in the 90's (was on $250, in this day and age he would demand 600 ish). Used to put basically every cent back over the bar on Sat night. Eric Martin was supprisingly also a good bloke to give money too. On several occasions he gave his match payments back when he wasnt happy with his performance

Maybe tongue in cheek but close to the truth. Guys who don't get paid but whinge about others getting paid can't play. They're just jealous of others getting money and avoid questioning their own ability by taking a 'moral' stance as otherwise they would be lead to the inevitable conclusion that they can't play.

A solid case for both sides and one which a toss of the coin could decide . I've played with some of the most ruthless money hungry a**holes you could . The only reson for playing is for the money and they could'nt care about the club or their team mates . But on the other side I've played with some fantastic blokes who have not just spent their money locally but helped the local lads with player . A fine balance between a great club bloke and a wanker that gets his money and runs . If you carefully sift through the pile you will find a gem , most clubs need paid players to be successful , just not blokes that play for money or themselves .

Thanks Andy, Yes it is what I was referring too! Dont blame the player for taking the money... Blame the club, hey if a club wants to shell out a few hundred for a player, then why blame a player for saying.. I will play for that?

Its a reality, its not going to change, There are some clubs who just dont pay players, there are other clubs who will, and success has different meanings to both sets of clubs.

what is wrong with playing for a bit of cash everyone needs it, it's not the good players fault they are better than some scrubbers who can't get paid, if they think they should get some cash go to another club!!!
