Itinerary is now looking like -

Greece 2 weeks > Paris 3 nights > Edinburgh/Scotland 5 nights > London 4-5 nights

Looks like we will miss the start of the EPL season but the SPL will have started.

Re: car hire, do you have any work perks in regards to discounts? Some companies have employee discount codes that can be very handy, same goes with accommodation.

Yes wife has access to discounts via sixt which is good, with there being 4 of us, plus possibly the FIL in Greece it is tricky as most cars seems small over there (or the bigger ones are expensive)

The drive from Scotland to London is great but I’d probably add a stop in along the way to really enjoy the scenery.
In the UK like many places you get charged a small fee for one way rentals and due to taxes it’s nearly always more expensive to collect your car at the airport. To save some dollars, pick it up in the city and then drop off at the airport.
Diesel cars are still the most popular and most rental agencies will offer you a diesel car. Last trip diesel was about £1.50-1.70/l but cars are pretty efficient. EV’s are becoming popular but I was unsure of charging locations so gave it a miss. Parking can be expensive in the city and in Edinburgh and London PT is the best way to get around so perhaps don’t get your car until you are ready to leave Edinburgh

When we went to UK in 2001 we caught the train between London and Edinburgh but Id like to drive this time and see some of the cities etc in between.

Our timing isn't great as we will be there just after the commonwealth games and just before the Fringe and tattoo which will mean it will be super busy and expensive, we are looking at some places outside of the city due to having a car.

Our list trip we went to Edinburgh specifically for the Tattoo.
It was fantastic and the city was a buzz but yeah it was super expensive (and the UK is already expensive).
To top it off I copped a £60 parking ticket in Edinburgh.
On the way up we stopped at a town called Selkirk that was about an hour out of Edinburgh to save a few $$.
Awesome little town with a great pub and real historic town so great to see on foot. The pub grub was awesome and the beer was top notch. They had a great little bakery in town and in the morning we went in and they were just finishing their baking. Picked up a big feast and surprisingly cheap and we were able to stop on the side of the road a few times for a picnic or snack. Stated at on old manor that was pretty cool. Lots of great little town just outside Edinburgh that will be heaps cheaper. Edinburgh is well connected by rail and many towns probably 30-60 minutes away by rail
