Speaking of, Festivus is nearly upon us.

Everytime I work interstate Im entitled to claim up to $100 per day for food/drink etc, One time I claimed over $50, the rest of the time it is less than $50.

Even though there is an "entitlement" there is still an expectation that common sense use applies and can be scrutinised. If i went out and spent $99 every day I would rightfully questioned.

Wouldn't have thought. Not so much for breakfast, but i will attempt to spend every cent of my meal allowance.
I don't get living away from home allowance. So i will max out every time

I'm not sure if I have a limit or not, I just don't take the piss, and I've never been questioned across a few employers now.

If I'm with someone more senior and they want to take the piss, I will be one step behind, encouraging the behavior all the way!

If you view it as an entitlement you'll treat it as such and you'll take it because you think you're entitled too it. If you treat it as a perk you'll appreciate it's of benefit too you but you won't, as perfectly put above, take the piss.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

Use the same allowances as regular staff.

Not sure on federal public sector workers but State Government get $40 for dinner per night if away from home and accommodation for $150 per night.

Whilst there’s some heat on MPs expenses, I’m amazed that their working away from home allowance that funds Canberra real estate that they buy, then rent on taxpayer’s expense therefore gifting themselves properties doesn’t get the airtime it deserves.

Again, all perfectly legal but this one does stink.
Dunno, I’m just an idiot.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-12-12/aged-care-patients-stuck-in-hospital-beds/106123998

This is an out of sight out mind for the majority of Australians but it speaks to the stresses of ramping, access and sub acute care needs of the country. In short the public health system is constipated.

it's not going to get any better especially when the baby boomers were rooting themselves silly in the late 60s and early 70s producing us.

The need for Aged Care beds that are properly funded is going to be critical social for Australian and indeed most western countries over the next 20 -50 years.

We also need better funding for the primary health networks (GPs, community care centres) to maximise hospital avoidance and provide better care in the community.

This not a rant against the current government as governments of all persuasions have kicked this can down the road for the last 30 years since the Commonwealth Aged Care Act was first passed in 1997.

IMO the only way forward is to increase the GST to 15% or broaden the current base.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

This is one of many pressures in the public health system which can no longer be sustainably funded by the States anymore.

Albo can find squillions for Yankee mining companies to fund projects they should be paying themselves but can’t find money to fix the aged care shortage

Public Heath funding largely comes from the feds with activity based funding model that has been in place for the last 20 years.

The States are the funnel with some top ups for various programs

As you know, it’s a State govt responsibility though, consuming a huge hole in their budget.

The GST, for example, is a Federal tax which is wholly distributed to the States, but this doesn’t diminish the State’s responsibility to deliver their services.

I agree that public health funding is a massive issue, but the Feds use the funding model as a way to ‘leverage’ the States, as they have done elsewhere.

For what it’s worth, I think the Feds should just take it over and stop the charade.

I have seen this first hand with my 91yo FiL. Calvary Adelaide is full most of the time
But I have also been to St Andrews & Calvary North Adelaide and seen entire wards shut down and not being used

**** that on the GST. How about both Federal and State Govts stop wasting so much money. They dont need any more to waste

We are Accor top tier members so stay at the Pullman a bit when in town and 3 floors of the Pullman are dedicated to “hospital” beds for elderly and those that don’t require high care.
I often wonder on what kind of rate the state is being charged for this
