Mate of mine has a machine and it really changed his life. More energy, lost weight and feels healthier

Only issue he says (other than getting used to the face mask) is the machine makes a noise all night

I started getting symptoms of sleep apnoea in about 1996, daytime drowsiness, snoring++, rising blood pressure and cholesterol levels. These have all normalised since I started on CPAP in 1999. Some machines are more noisy than others, and mine (Resmed) has never bothered the woman who shares my bed.

Those that automatically drop the pressure as you breathe out are good. I've never needed the humidifier the dealers tend to try to sell you. Mask fit is critical. I've found the nasal pillows dislodge if you roll over in your sleep. I've never needed a full face mask, just the nose mask, but some of the newer very compact models tend to slide around a bit too, and so I use an older one. I've had to alter the straps on some masks as we all have different head shapes and they tend to be made for the average European shape - I have a flatter crown and longer occipital bulge at the back than that.

Hoses are a factor to watch - more modern softer rubber connectors tend to perish sooner.

I went and saw a sleep doctor of my own accord 2 years or so ago. I'd put on weight, my blood pressure was high and I was tired of waking up more tired than I was when i went to bed.

The analysis was that I had sleep apnoea - which I knew I had already. My ex-girlfriend timed me holding my breath one night for 45 seconds. The analysis told the story that every time I hit a deep sleep I had an episode.

So two years down the track, after several mask types and sizes, my sleep is better but not 'fixed'. I said to my doctor that I think I'm looking for the utopian sleep - however even sleeping 70% with the mask is better than the previous 50 years of sleeping was for me. Recently I went away and didn't take my machine with me and slept 'well' or so I thought but I woke up with mothballs in my head. I felt very ordinary and what it reinforced was that, even if I did think I had a poor sleep with my mask, I'm better off than sleeping without it.

To your question. Does it work wonders? I've heard it can but not for me. I still wake up tired but I am a very light sleeper. So any leaks in the mask wake me up.

Does it take a bit of getting used to? For me, yes! Mask leakage is the biggest issue, so if you are a light sleeper and turn around in bed often this can be problematic.

You can always go down the path of a mouthguard as well. That's another option your clinician will advise you about.

Now that I've got a slight head cold, the nose pillow option proves problematic for me. I'm still weighing up the mouthguard but I'll take that info on board. Thanks!
