i agree theres no problem starting trainign now it shows u and ur club is committed to do well, and it gives u a headstart on the rest of the teams tha start later. last year we started early to mid december and it helped a great deal, we were known for being able to run out games strongly

From the end of the season I do nothing until November starts. Then I'll start going for a run every couple of days and by the time we start training late November-early December I'm usually glad I did.

we used to do a preseason at the bulls which consisted of 10 to 12 weeks 3 nights a week and that was ample to get fit. stearted mid january. i think if you start to early burn out factor can come into it.

Three nights a week is a bit much though isn't it?

if your serious about getting fit its better then starting before x-mas you only lose what you done in the festive season. plus some guys may only do 2 nights as they miss friday because they play cricket. was a succesfull formula

I'd say burn out occurs for two reasons. The first is when training volume/intensity increases too rapidly. The second is when training volume/intensity remains at a high level over a long period of time. This second will occur over the course of a footy season whether starting in Jan. or Nov. unless the intensity, volume or frequency is mixed up a bit. Players and coaches should recognise signs of overtraining such as the runs(I get this all the time if I train too hard), persistent muscle soreness or fatigue.

By starting earlier you can actually condition your body to deal with an increased training load and I'd say getting some work done early is the way to go, as long as you don't go hell for leather. This is probably why most clubs start earlier so that everyone isn't feeling like shit when the bulk of pre season starts. Three nights a week isn't that much. Christ, the government preaches to do at least that.

Three nights a week isn't that much. Christ, the government preaches to do at least that.

The government preaches 3 times a week, for half an hour, at a moderate intensity. 3 half-hour power-walks per week. 3 nights a week of an Australian Rules pre-season is a little different to a walk.

But if you don't do that now you won't be able to cope with the volume required to get properly fit later on.

It shits me when people pull out of training during the year because they're "sore". Half the time it's because they haven't done enough work before hand. The other half its because they're lazy.

Pre-season isn't just about getting fit, it is also about conditioning you're body for the work ahead.

I reckon thats closer to the mark, good word #24. Its the guys that blow out over Christmas, and were probably never that fit to begin with that starting around this time of year will benefit most. If the better, fitter, older bloke’s don’t train constantly at this time of year, than that’s acceptable. The core group generally looks after themselves fine.

Starting pre-season now is for the blokes who don't play a summer sport. those that do might want to go for a run once a week to keep the blood flowing.

As soon as my uni exams are over I'm off to play Russian Roulette with vehicles riding my bike (complete with Lycra clothing  ) once or twice a week for 30 kms each ride I did it last year from about feb onwards and I want to see what a solid few months on it are like.

Doesn't riding your bike too much shorten hamstrings?

I don't know if it's that simple. Long distance runners have probs with hamstrings because of their faster cadence, I'm sure if stretching was the answer there would be no problem. I think the issue is not working the muscle through the full range of motion.

Or is it poor core stability not allowing the pelvis to be stable throughout teh running stride....

Good runners/athletes have good/optimal flexibility and core control poor runners athletes (like me) do not.

Andy you aint gunna win this argument with Tassie. I have had bad hamstrings for the last few years and do my fair share of streching
