Had my first Burra home game experience on Saturday, nice spot, planning a weekend up there in a months time.

When I first walked in I bump into 2 of their new Waikerie recruits who I coached in the last 2 years in town, all of us looking at each other with WTF you doing here?!

North Clare looked like they were going to have a day out with the first 7 scoring shots, to BBH's credit they pulled it back late in the 1st and they had control of the game in the 2nd but couldn't hit the scoreboard, the game got away from them in the 3rd and that was it. They are taking a while to gel and the feeling is they will improve as the season goes on. Certainly played a lot better than R1.

Burra is a nice town....some good cafes down there these days.

Hows the slope....haha fun to bat on in cricket.

You did pick some of the best weather that you will ever get in that town

Haha
Played a lot of juniors up there and for some reason the fixture seemed to always have us playing at Burra in the very middle of winter. If the ground wasn’t covered in ice it was covered by fog. Horrible place :)

Yep not uncommon to play with the weather in the minuses or fog so bad you cant see from one end to outside the 50.

Then they have the carpet in the away changerooms so by the time senior footy starts the carpet is soaking wet and the mositure in the air makes the changerooms horribly cold. Normally have a few out with the flu and colds the next week :) :) :)

The first of the 29 byes we have in a season is here.....what do we know so far.

A Grade
BSR team to beat and that will be very hard.
Min Man look to have found their groove and reckon they might be the contender
Southern Saints have been plagued by injury, their best will still be decent but they just need to get blokes on the park. In danger of missing the finals.
Blyth & North Clare appear better than predicted and could play finals.
RSMU probably the most disappointing to start the year at 0-3 after talking up a massive game in the off season
Forget about South Clare & BBH

B Grade
Southern Saints seeing the filter of injuries hurting them but if they can get everyone back they will be very strong again
Blyth with all the old heads still going around plus a bit more depth will make finals and one to watch
Min Man one to watch, much better depth and a good crop of young lads. My sleeper for the flag this year.
BSR 2-1, will be very dependent on the A Grade and what happens with resting players ect at the higher level
North Clare have had an outstanding start and could be in the top 4 discussion.
BBH, will be more competitive but not in the finals discussion imo.
South Clare, forget about them unless they start stacking from next week.

Not bottom two forever but definitely the last 3-4 years

Can’t shed light on the point situation.

In saying that they only used 1 of 12 points last game with some senior colts playing.

Just seems weird the way the points are unless whats on sporting pulse is wrong.
How do you guys still have 6? Same as Saints
It seems the exec of the comp is asleep at the wheel and they could be doing alot more to even up the comp. Its a very boring comp, not just because you guys win every year but because not much changes with who is competitive and who is not and the massive beltings dont benefit anyone when your towns are trying to stay relevant

Clubs can't fill there quota now, more points is not going to make them more $$$attractive$$$ to recruits

I’m not sure other clubs are fighting for more points because like what others have said they can’t fill their quota now.

I did hear somewhere and could be completely wrong but 5 or 6 points is the minimum points a league is allowed to drop a club to.

Points are judged of minor round performance and the saints finished top last year which is why I believe we are ok equal points with them.

Apart from BSR there have been a fair few changes in who else makes the GF, over the last five years Saints, Min Man, RSMU have all played in the GF, go back ten year and it’s those sides plus Blyth and South Clare. Only BBH and North Clare haven’t played in an A Grade grand final in the last ten years. Both however were the teams of 2000’s

South Gawler are at 4, i think the B&L go as low as 3.
I get that clubs are having recruiting players anyway but for there to be only 6points between BSR and BBH is baffling. I doubt Jonas, Westhoff and Butcher would get BBH within 10 goal of BSR
But at least if the assoc exec get the points right in theory they can say they have done all they can to try and even the comp
Teams that make the finals are pretty similar each year, maybe one in one out

I don’t sit in on the meetings so not sure how they work it out. We just play by the rules that exists

Won’t matter next year anyway they can have 100pts each but when Nick Hayes, Jack Hayes, Lachie Wilsdon and Patty Weckert all come back as zero pointers it will be more one sided than ever.

When BBH fold maybe you can split into 2 clubs again :D

3 clubs
When I played up there in juniors which admittedly was an eternity ago they were 3 individual clubs and BBH was still 2 individual clubs. I can remember it being a 10 team comp up there

In all seriousness the BSR success has been built of a freakish generation of footballers.

In the last 3 years the club has had 7 junior footballers play SANFL league football or higher. Not sure many country clubs (maybe a couple Barossa clubs) could boast that kind of numbers......

Nick Hayes (Eagles)
Jack Hayes (Eagles)
Patrick Weckert (Eagles)
Alex Morgan (West)
Matt Longbottom (North Adelaide)
Jackson Lee (Port Adelaide)
Lachie Wilsdon (North Adelaide)

Back again.....

South Clare vs BBH
A Grade: Weirdly these sides met in Round 1 in Clare with South Clare running out comfortable winners. Since then though they have copped a bunch of injuries whilst BBH look to be slightly on the improve. Despite the game being in Clare i expect this to be closer than the first encounter and will even go with BBH in an upset win.

B Grade: The injuries have taken their toll on South Clare and their B Grade is hanging on by a thread. Unless they get a bunch of blokes back i would expect BBH to win again as they did in round 1.

BSR vs Southern Saints
A Grade: Another game that is a repeat of the Round 1 match up. Once again you would expect BSR to be far to good for an injury plagued Southern Saints......unless they have a few back in or few guys return to playing.

B Grade: Saints by two goals in the round 1 encounter. I would expect this to be another close one with the Saints once again being a tad to strong.

Min Man vs RSMU
A Grade: Min Man have found their mojo in recent weeks whilst an injury plagued RSMU have started the season 0-3 after much hype. No reason to think Min Man wont continue their good form and should be at least 5 goals to strong for RSMU in a local derby.

B Grade: Similar theme to the A Grade, Min Mans young b grade have found their groove and playing some high temp high scoring footy. RSMU do have some class in their B Grade but they are also carrying some blokes so would expect Min Man to win this one by closer to ten goals.

Blyth/Snowtown vs North Clare
A Grade: Game of the round for mine. Two sides who are probably exceeding outside expectations and now have finals on their bingo card. A win in this one will go along way for both clubs. Hard to decide between the two but going to go with B/S at home whilst in hot form.

B Grade: A surprising early season top of the table clash between these. Blyth have got the combination of quality old heads alongside youth just right and would expect them to get over the line by 3-4 goals against a North Clare side who are really buying into their new coach.
