My point being would you give up a lot to get him, great getting 35 possessions but if you’re not defensive, what’s your opponent getting? Thats never analysed.

Do they really have 'an opponent'. Its more about defending zones, numbers behind the ball and the entire team defending.

Train-on player Josh Lai has been awarded a place on Port Adelaide’s AFL list during the Supplementary Selection Period.

The 19-year-old was identified by the club’s recruiting team out of Cheltenham Football Club in Melbourne’s Southern League, and was initially noticed for his power, speed, competitiveness and strong overhead marking.

Lai moved to Adelaide to train with Port Adelaide’s AFL side in early December and has fit in seamlessly.

Port Adelaide list manager Jason Cripps acknowledged Lai’s hard work to gain his opportunity.

“We are really pleased to welcome Josh to the club,” Cripps said.

“We have been impressed with his approach to training, the way he learns and applies feedback, and how quickly he has adapted to the intensity needed at AFL level.

“Josh has some strong AFL traits, and since he’s arrived at Alberton, he’s shown how coachable and hard working he is.

“It’s clear he has significant upside and we know he is in the right environment to grow as an AFL player.”

Lai was born in Singapore to an Australian mother and Singaporean father, and spent the first few years of his life growing up in China, before moving to Melbourne when he was six years old.

He found an early taste for competitive sport playing soccer, but later switched to football and moved through the junior ranks at Hampton Rovers as a midfielder and half back flanker, before moving onto the wing.

Lai was excited to begin his football career at Port Adelaide.

“I’m really stoked to join Port Adelaide,” Lai said.

“Things have happened so fast, I can’t quite believe it. I’m so grateful for the chance to be on an AFL list. I feel like I’ve put my best foot forward but I certainly wasn’t expecting this.

“Since I’ve been at the club, I’ve learned so much about professionalism and the right way to go about things. It’s pretty cool to be able to play football for a career.

“The players, coaches and staff have made me feel so welcome so I couldn’t be happier.”

Sounds like Jack Watkins, former North VFL captain, is staying in SA and will play with Port Adelaide in the SANFL.

It is. I assume but don’t know that it is a Category B spot, such is the allowable interpretation.

Both of them signed on for Port under the SANFL concessions under the impression they were enhancing their chances to get on the AFL list.

Guernseys would take 4-5 months to get art work done, printed and to the club. I think they'll be wearing GFG on their backs all year.

I’m probably going to upset people here, but I feel this needs to be said.

I have no idea where Port are or will be on the creditor list and am sorry that they apparently have been caught up in this mess, but I hope that the State Govt, with their newly legislated clout, will ensure that as many of the smaller creditors get paid as soon as possible. I would have thought that Port would be towards the end of the list, but ahead of the GFG and related companies, who I hope do not get a red cent.

I’d say the same thing if GFG were a delinquent sponsor of Glenelg.
Dunno, I’m just an idiot.

Port will be chucked in with all the small businesses and get 10c in the dollar if/when they liquidate, I just hope Mali has the taxpayer as a secured creditor so the state gets precedence.

Port need to keep GFG on their jumper etc until they know there is no chance of full payment, thats not known yet. Would look pretty silly if they can turn things around if they went too early and ditched them.

The legislation rushed through Parliament this morning puts the State at the top of the creditor list.
