The characters of the good old days

Postby dedja » Wed Dec 11, 2024 12:15 pm

Dunno if there has been a similar thread before :-?? … but if so, who cares X_X

As I watch some of the games of old as Fox usually does to fill their Footy Channel between seasons, I note that I usually I know more players back in the 70’s and 80’s then I do now. Yes, I’m a dinosaur.

Anyway, as today’s world has been sanitised to buggery (a topic for another day), I still marvel at the characters of old.

Names like Crackers Keenan, Ronnie Wearmouth, Vin Catoggio, Rod Carter, Billy Picken, Phil Carman, Mark Jackson, Wow Jones, Rene Kink, Mick Nolan, Don Scott, Bruce Duoll, Brent Crosswell, Rex Hunt, Peter Daicos, Gary Ablett (Sr), Paul Vander Haar, Dermott Brereton, Billy Duckworth, David Rhys-Jones, Tom Alvin, Derek Kickett, Doug Hawkins, Robbie Muir, Nicky Winmar, Krakouer brothers, …

I’ve just scratched the surface …there are many, many more …
Dunno, I’m just an idiot.

Crackers dropping Don Scott is one of my all-time favourite highlights..

On the subject of terrible commentators, Scott is number #1.

Scott confused a lot of people … was one of the hardest nuts on the ground, but carried a pink handbag off it.

The one gripe I have with the replays from the late 80's & early 90's, is that quite a lot of them feature Don and his incessant whining.

Bitched and moaned about every tiny error, adding zero to the game. Think Gerard Healy but 100 times worse.

Maybe it's because the both of them have such inflated views of themselves...

Lou Richards was the worst … didn’t know players names and I reckon he couldn’t see a thing for the last 20 years he commentated. All he’d say is “there’s a go now”, with no idea who had the ball.

How good was The Winners, and then The Winners Rebooted with Drew Morphett. Little known fact is that he moonlighted as Rod ‘Curly’ Austin at Carlton.

The Winners, featuring the off-centre camera angle at Waverly. Made kicking to the left of screen seem like it was done on a 300m oval!

The commentators on the ABC tv coverage, such as Doug Heywood always seemed to be better than those from the commercial stations, predominantly ch7.

Watching some of the highlights I was surprised how good a player Neil Balme was in his career at Richmond.

Interesting to see some footage of Rpyce Hart, who I've been told by at least one person, that he was better than Carey.

Enjoyable watching Jesaulenko play, plus a few others such as John Nicholls, Mick Conlan and Bosustow.

Gerard Healy is annoying as a commentator, but I really enjoyed watching him play back in the day, very skilful.

Rachele showed some character and got smashed for it, by media and club.Ginnivan showed some character and K Cornes hated on him, but most people seemed to like it.

No doubt the characters of old would have had some haters, but I guess the players and teams didnt care as much what the media said

You've gotta earn the right IMO, Rachele shat the bed, mouthed off pre-game, carried on when he had only done one thing and at the end of the day the bloke is scared of his own shadow.

As far as Ginnivan is concerned, I wouldn't be giving too much of a toss what Kornes says, Ginnivan backs it up, he plays the hard ball, he gets belted and keeps on going and he excels when he's getting crap thrown at him, I think he's great for the game and I look forward to his personality on the field for a long time yet. He might be a bit of a goose but I don't mind him putting himself out there.

Even though I'm a Power supporter I would love to see Rachele take the next step on a consistent basis and then I'd have no qualms in him ;putting it out there, the bloke is seriously talented at times.

Ginnivan keeps rolling the arms up in the tackle and he'll spend half the season in concussion protocols.

I agree with everything you said.

Even though Rachele hasn't backed up what he says with how he plays, I like the banter

I didn't mind the sledge during the week, I would've pulled up short on the getting in the grill of the supporters with the no teeth gesture, we can all get caught up in the moment though, in this instance it seemed to distract him from then on. I'm sure he'll learn from it and save it for once the cat is in the bag, I do like it too.

Ha, probably the last bloke in the league I'd give a serve to, arguably the most influential player in the game and possibly my favourite player.

We’ve lost the characters as the game has become more professional and we over analysis every aspect.

He celebrated to hard to early…..that cost his team the game.

He said this in the paper…..that made the other team try more

The reality is there are 1 million and 1 moments in a game from bad bounces, to umpire decisions, to injuries. We try to hard to use chaos theory to justify the result and make a story out of something that really didn’t have that big affect. That also comes from the fact the news isn’t about reporting the events that happened in a game, it’s about creating a headline that sensationalises moments within a game to get more likes, reacts, comments, views, create debate and divide.
