Been reading up on the AUKUS deal, it seems as though multiple US agencies are entrenched in the deal ( Pentagon, State Department, Congress ) so Trump withdrawing from it will be difficult but his landslide on all fronts means he may just have the power to do it. Then again we're getting stitched up on the deal and even though he's an awful business man he'll see the $3bn we're in for and take it I think. Either way this win could have long lasting impacts on the South Australian economy, something that interests and impacts all of us.
AUKUS and the subs are in zero danger IMO and speaking to a few USMC lads recently they think likewise.
Trump first and foremost is a wheeler and dealer, he will tell Albo we are going to go ahead with the deal but wi need to offer up something. Albo wi cough up whatever, both sides wi shake hands and feel like they have won and it wi be all sweet.
Australia is logistically very important for the US and troop numbers based here wi most likely triple in the coming years. Don’t forget the new tanks have already started arriving and too much money tied up for us to walk away either.

Yep in little insular ol' Adelaide it's not noticeable but there basically a permanent presence of USMC troops stationed in Darwin doing their training and R&R.

They really get into the annual Defence Force v PFES ANZAC day footy game in Darwin.

The US needs us to maintain their Asia Pacific influence.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I thought the deal was done. Why should we offer something else up?

USMC is always at Edinburgh too and up in the NT we have Tindal almost finished its upgrade and the US are basing nuclear Stealth bombers up there. Only just recently the B2 stealth bombers were up there on their way to and from their sortie in the ME against the Houthi’s. Our new M1A2 Abrams tanks are headed to Cairns and Townsville at the request of the Yanks so I’d say both Australia and the US are all in on the deal.

Because that’s what Trump does.
He likes to do deals and he will intimidate us into tacking on something at the threat of tearing up the deal. It will be something insignificant on the scale of things but it will be perceived as a “win” for him.

That’s only for the fire station and fuel depot isn’t it.
I was led to believe BMD had finished the apron and taxiway for the tankers which was the big hold up

I'm probably a bit naïve but I can't really say I've noticed a lot of difference in life regardless of who is President (with the exception of course of Afghanistan).

I agree there will be minimal impact.

From an economic perspective, Trump has been clear that he is interested in protecting america, and will look to impose significant tarrifs on imports.
This could lead to a downturn in China's output if their exports into America decline, which could see a decrease in demand for Australian raw materials.
Naturally this would weaken the aussie dollar.
There was a sharp drop of roughly 1.3% yesterday as the market looks to bake that scenario in already.

A weaker AUD makes our imports more expensive, and also increases the demand for our exports, both actions are inflationary, so you could see the RBA continue to have concerns about inflation and therefore be more reluctant to drop interest rates, or even worse, increase them again.

I think that's probably a step too far, and I don't think we will see rates rise in the short term, but yes, thats a potential conclusion if Donny goes hard with his proposed tarrifs and other forms of protection.

We rely heavily on the US for defence and let's see how he gets along with Xi Jinping before we say it'll have no impact on us.

Those same fears that rolled out 8 years ago and never amounted to anything?

Sure, this time Donny doesn't need to worry about getting re-elected, but I can't see him behaving considerably different to last time.

The US needs Taiwan more than it needs China and I’m pretty sure Trump will do whatever it takes to keep Taiwan as a free country. Hence they need us and unfortunately many feel we will be sucked into any altercations with China
