Didn't care until the cunning VFL decided to show live footy into SA.

The Winners was must watch TV before live

I used to sit in the lounge with Dad and listen to the VFL footy on the radiogram on Saturday afternoons
I was rewarded for my loyalty when he took me to my first VFL game - the 1970 GF
I still hate Ted Hopkins to this day

I have been a centrals supporter for as long as I can remember, I then watched the 1983 VFL GF when I was 8 and ended up with an interest in the hawks as well. When the rat went there it sealed the deal for me as a hawks supporter and have never looked back.

The Rat owes me one … or two.

I think it was ‘88, anyway, we used to watch the VFL GF in the Adelaide Uni Bar. Someone had the bright idea that we’d draw a player number from a hat for both teams, and whoever we drew, we had to down a beer for every touch they had.

I drew no. 44 for the Hawks. I don’t remember the 2nd half, but I was told later that he had the most disposals in the match.

It could have been worse, we also had the goal umpires in the hat, so if you drew one of them, you were up every time they waved the flags.

Didn't really follow anyone before the crows came in. I liked the saints cause my older brother loved them. So I followed the cows first year and went to their first game. I was 9. Followed them all that year. But at the end of that season I didn't wanna follow then cause everyone did. So I looked at the ladder and saw the swans bottom of the ladder so I picked them... So since 92 I have been going for them

I was a bit like this too. Followed the Crows in the first couple years, went to a handful of games, including in '92 when there was 25k against Fitzroy and low 30's another week and they weren't playing well. The atmosphere still felt like footy to me.
'93 they won a few games and all of a sudden everyone was on the bandwagon, people who had never liked footy, or followed the SANFL, talking about building new stands etc etc. It was when the Eagles were a genuine premiership contender after all the years of following Woodville, and, being at that age of forming my values and opinions, just couldn't stomach all the sh!t around the Crows and the decreased media attention on the SANFL.
I think if Fitzroy were still around I may have taken up with them, butt have had no inclination to follow any other AFL team. I'll have a soft-spot for Tassie, but doubt that will lead to being a full-blown supporter.

Just think, if you'd drawn Billy Frampton last year you could have legally driven home.

I understand the younger generation that dont follow a SANFL team but follow Power. Maybe they have a passing interest in a SANFL team
Like you, what i dont understand is someone following a SANFL club thats not Magpies but following the Power.
I wonder how many used to follow a AFL club but have changed to the Power?

That’s a really good point, there used to be a time when most people seemingly followed an SANFL club, but that doesn’t tend to happen now, so there would be lots of people who have no SANFL affiliation but support an AFL club, including Port.

I was 8 during 1977 so North Melbourne was the glamour team so I pick them but moved to Geelong as that seems to line with most South supporters but wasn’t that interested.

I picked South as my great grandmother went to a north v south game at prospect as a kid and south won so she picked them and as she helped to raised me as a kid, I picked them as well. If north had won on that day, would have seen more premierships in my lifetime (well, a premiership at least)

Why would anyone change?
I supported the Port Magpies and Carlton well before Port entered the AFL so I stuck with the Blues!
I think if Port had got the 1st license before the Crows it may have been a different story though
