I can't help but feel the longer the SANFL want to keep Port in the SANFL the worse off we are.

What I was told in 1990 by a number of Torrens people including Board members was that Torrens were insolvent at the end of 1990 and were to be wound up by their creditors. Furthermore their Board members were liable for outstanding debts and would have been out of pocket themselves. Either the merge would still have happened or sadly Torrens would have ceased to exist.
Woodville were solvent, but they thought they had a bleak future. Clearly the merger has formed a very strong club.

I don't believe Torrens were insolvent.

They were, if they didn't merge they would have ceased to exist in any form.
Why Woodville members on the other hand voted for it I have no idea.

Not even heresay, its fact.
Were something like a million dollars in debt and a bank or two knocking on their doors.
Had no way of paying their debts, just kept getting in deeper and deeper.

Those at the club at the time will happily disagree about the financial situation being that dire.

Not those that I know, and it was pretty widely reported at the time. There was no contention.
Their financials were public knowledge.

Wedgie is correct. Whether WTFC were technically 'insolvent' I couldn't say, but certainly in dire financial straits with a number of creditors chasing them.

Page 234 of The Best of Both Worlds book goes into it in detail.

Briefly, from Torrens point of view:
- An early season conference established a “Debt Free by ‘93” campaign based on the knowledge an SA AFL side could come into play in 1995.
- Debt was not the main problem according to WT President Rex Sellers.
- Port’s and then SANFL announcement of composite side for AFL changed everything.
- Predictions of drop of 40% revenue due to AFL side coming in was the killer.
- Woodville chairman Bill Sanders phone Sellers and merger was discussed.
- WT board surprised but agreed to consider when Sellers took it to them.
- Working committee secretly worked out all the details.
- Players told on August 27.
- Club members told in 1st of 2 info nights on August 30.
- Final game September 8.
- Some interesting quotes from players at the time and ex players. Some agreeing. Some saying it was inevitable. Some disappointed at the lack of a rally or any sort of fight to save the club.
- It was very quick and a shock to most at the time, despite being in the pipeline for 15 years.

Then Koch will probably use it as a platform to say "sorry" but he was so frustrated by all the onerous rules placed on their AFL reserves, without naming them or being held to account. The spineless SANFL will then pay the fine for him and Duldig will become head of football at the Power next year.

It was so ridiculous, basically saying waiting on their requested rule changes or are they going to the VFL where their players would be developed better. Everyone knows the VFL doesn't want them and it's not even an option. Supposedly doesn't know or care if he got fined by the SANFL. Does he really not know what the response to the SANFL was or is he a complete liar.

There's the solution - send the interlopers to the WAFL!

Another failed year for Crows & Power since having a reserves side in the SANFL. Maybe the old system was better.
