I assume you were there Stamp?
I think it was Max Hall (but stand corrected) who stated that Bagshaw said afterwards that Sturt were lucky as they won the toss, and the Bays would have been premiers if the toss went the other way.
That said, the Bays were outscored in the last quarter when they had the breeze (I think), plus it was said that the ground was unprotected from the wind in footy park’s first year as it was yet to be completed, so Sturt made the most of it in the 1st quarter.
Dunno, I wasn’t there and was too young to remember, so don’t know how much the wind varied or changed during the match.
The Bays definitely got the best of the conditions in the ‘81 prelim, was enjoyable being there with Norwood High school friends and on the Monday back at school. Not so the week after.

ANZAC Day 1980. 22,705 at Adelaide Oval; the biggest crowd of the minor round that season. Port vs South on the same day at Football Park drew 19,556.
In Round 21 of the same year, West Torrens defeated Sturt by 5 goals in front of 10,000 at Football Park to comfortably sit above them in 3rd spot with 13 wins, a win and over 20 goals percentage in front. In Round 22, the final round, Glenelg would defeat West Torrens by 20 points in front of 11,000 at Footy Park and Sturt 31.20 (206) defeated West 12.11 (83) to just pip the Eagles on percentage by 0.18%. Torrens would go on to lose the Elimination Final against Norwood the next week and never play another Final again.
Expectation and hopes would've been high for Eagles supporters after that ANZAC Day win in 1980 - putting them top of the table. Perhaps it is relative success since the amalgamation, but expectations are very low heading in to this weekend, scraping in on 8 wins. But opportunities to play finals are rare and winning them is hard. There is always hope if you're still in the game at this time of year. May the Eagles take the opportunity to put their best forward on Sunday and win or lose, leave nothing out there. You never know when your next opportunity will be.

Great footage. Galt & McVicar were terrible footballers, Peter Marker & Ian Day however were the best commentators…
