The Indians were bricking it last weekend as their hit and miss minor round form from this season appeared to be heading towards it’s biggest miss of the season. The Indians managed to hang on by just six points over wycbloods in what would have been one of the biggest boilovers of the Hogg this season. Last week’s two game gap between the eight and the pack was reduced to one this week when the Clots and TigerRoos had important wins and Slothy ended his losing run to put a stop to PorterGuns winning form of late. Petracca’s Picnic copped a few injuries and didn’t have their Freo contingent but were still good enough to defend top spot with a win over HeadButters. ZedForce looks the likely challenger to Cub and his Picnic so far this season.

It’s tight at the top in Divvy I as different top sides have dropped matches in recent weeks but recovered to win their next to stay in touch with a ladder leader that isn’t getting too far away. Two weeks ago it was a two game gap between 8 and 9 now the gap has emerged between 7 and 8 as PorterGuns have dropped their last two matches, leaving the door open for four teams with six wins who are just one game out. Jays Jocks looks the main threat after their stellar 2107 as they topped the league for the week. It’s hard to make a case for the bottom four unless you’re using black wood, and that the case has handles on the side. They look Gawn. As for who takes out this one, I’m liking Zed more and more each week and I reckon Pooly will be about the place as well. Petracca not finished by any means and he will be one team that will be happy when the byes end but he might not be the top side when they finally do.

16 Slothy 3 12 29616 30952 95.68 12

The Indians are back in a big after they scalped ZedForce by a massive 251 points after an absolute glut of SuperCoach scoring. The Indians topped the Hogg and still smashed Zed’s percentage even though the Force got a pretty handy score themselves. Petracca’s Picnic and Headbutters stayed ahead of the Indians by a win and getting promoted to the Premier League next year could very well rely on avoiding the mighty Indians in the first week of the finals because they are back baby. To complete Zed’s downfall this week Pooly had a win as well so Zed are now down to 5th after not doing a lot wrong in recent weeks. The battle for what looks to be the last place in the eight took a turn as well as Jays Jocks, Chops Clots and Crowmagnon got important wins as Jims TigerRoos and PorterGuns copped the unwelcome loss. As result its Portries out and Clots in. We might see that scenario replaying itself in the AFL soon enough if the Hawks can get the job done. The bottom three all suck and somehow Herb jagged a win.

16 Richo Richo Man 4 13 35776 36944 96.84 16

Headbutters have skipped two games clear at the top of the table after they knocked Chops Clots out the eight and Petracca’s Picnic was well beaten by PorterGuns who took the Clots’ spot in the eight. The Indians are well and truly back in town after a rare midseason slump. Could it be that May-Z has learnt his lesson from previous seasons and has sucked up a few dodgy weeks for a run at the flag? If so it appears to have been a remarkable bit of SuperCoaching as the Indians are scoring well and are now top of the Hogg. This could be the year for the Indians. The stinker of the week goes to Coromandel Creeps who put in a score that would have left them vulnerable in Division V let alone the rapidly improving first division. A couple of teams seemed to have found their niche outside of the top eight with a lot of the teams just outside failing to secure a victory this week. A couple of the lower ranked sides did however. Wycbloods secured his second win over his brother Richo Richo Man who faces the prospect of getting two Hogg wooden spoons in a row after spooning it up in Premier League last year. Slothy has finally begun to live up to the lofty pre-season rating of this team and while they won’t be playing finals they will be a nasty opponent on the run in.

The Run Home Round 18
With three rounds to go I’m going to try and predict which eight teams will be in line to have a shot of being in Premier League next season. Remembering of course that you’ve got to make the Grand Final here to qualify. At this stage, I have ten teams still in the race with the price of entry for the finals here at a fairly steep eleven wins.

1. Headbutters 52 (Crowmagnon, Pool Swimmers, Cowpokes)
HeadButters has an awesome two game buffer and has two matches against top eight opposition which he splits. This will be more then enough to secure the minor premiership which should ensure he avoids redhot Indians all the way to the Grand Final. A great advantage to have coming into the finals.

2. Petracca’s Picnic 44 (ZedForce, Slothy, eddieslittleindians)
Easily the toughest run home of the contenders. As good as Cub has been this season, I can’t see him winning any of these matches. The double up against Slothy is especially stiff as he is racking up the points now and the other top four aspirants have dodged this matchup over the last three weeks.

3. eddieslittleindians 44 (Jays Jocks, Herbs’N’Spices, Petracca’s Picnic)
The Indians are on fire and deserve to start favourites in all three of these matches. The game against Cub in the last round is the hardest but Cub appears to be falling away just as the Indians are gathering theirs. It’s been a perfect run into the finals, a period where this side normally struggles. Reckon the Indians get second and face Pool Swimmers in week one of the finals.

4. Pool Swimmers 44 (Chops Clots, HeadButters, Crowmagnon)
Third spot could be a handy entrance gate for Pool Swimmers to be re-admitted to the Premier League. Even if he can’t upset the Indians in week one they wouldn’t have to face them in the Prelim should they win their semi. I think Pooly can win all three of these with obviously the match against the league leaders the tough one. Double chance bound.

5. ZedForce 44 (Petracca’s Picnic, Richo Richo Man, Coromandel Creeps)
ZedForce have been impressive this year but have often teetered on the brink of the top four. With matches against a wobbling Petracca and the Creeps who had an amazing bottom out last week, an opportunity exists to win all three matches here and play HeadButters in the first Qualifying final. Then Zed’s fate is in his own hands.

6. Cowpokes 44 (Jims TigerRoos, Chops Clots, , Headbutters)
The Cows got a vital win last week smashing the Creeps to hop into sixth. If they can beat the league leaders in the last round and if Zed and Cub slip up they could sneak into the top four. I don’t think they get quite that high. But two out of three from here and with Petracca copping a rough run in, I can see the Cows finishing 5th.

7. Coromandel Creeps 40 (wycbloods, PorterGuns, ZedForce )
It’s hard to work out what to make of last week’s disaster for the Creeps. I’d be backing them in to defeat wycblood but can’t have them against Porters or ZedForce. If they win one more match for the year then they will finish 8th as they won’t catch Petracca’s percentage. This will give them an elimination re-match against the team that pantsed them last week. Cooked?

8. PorterGuns 36 (Richo Richo Man, Coromandel Creeps, Jims TigerRoos)
A reasonably soft run in for PorterGuns which should net him three out of three wins based on recent scoring patterns. The Coromandel Creeps game is the toughest match but Porties are looking solid at the moment while the creeps are not. An elimination final match up with the nephew Petracca’s Picnic is on the cards and both sides looked much better than that earlier this season.

9. Chops Clots32 (Pool Swimmers, Cowpokes, wycbloods)
The Clots have had their moments this season but I don’t see them rolling Pool Swimmers and Cowpokes. I reckon they would have to win both and if they do win all three they would qualify for the top eight as they’d get the Creeps on percentage. That first game though!

10. Jays Jocks 32 (eddieslittleindians, Cromagnon, Herbs’N’Spices)
Can get to ten wins I feel but ten is not enough. The Jocks need to defeat the seemingly invincible Indians to stay alive this week so it’s fair to say that the finals have come early for the Jocks. I don’t think so but beat the Indians and it’s game on.

16 Slothy 5 13 36783 37943 96.94 20

After trying and almost succeeding on many previous occasions, 2024 looks like the year that eddieslittleindians finally get promoted to the Premier League. They are the leading team in the Hogg right now and unlike previous seasons they are scoring at the right end of the season. The little snooze the Indians had a few weeks ago was a much better time to have low scores and it looks like the Indians have learnt the lessons of the past. May-Z is going to be pretty hard to stop from here. HeadButters have secured the minor premiership you’d think while seven sides have qualified for the finals. PorterGuns have left the door open a bit and Chops Clots and Jays Jocks are close enough if good enough. Richo Richo had an important win as they seek to avoid their second straight Hogg spoon but the job is not done yet as Slothy’s scoring in the last month or so has been sensational.

16 Richo Richo Man 5 14 40269 41381 97.31 20

This premiership appears to be a race in three as Petracca’s Picnic has spent the past fortnight trying to give away the double chance but no one seems to want to grab it. Minor premiers butters is racking up the scores but it was non contender wycbloods who topped the league in scoring this week. Chops Clots stormed their way into the top eight with a win over top eight Cowpokes while the narrower nature of Porter Guns’ victory over the Creeps meant that the Guns are now out of the eight in what is a very tight race for that last available finals spot. Chops play wycbloods next week while Porties get the TigerRoos so it’s anyone’s guess who grabs eighth. I’ll get the old crystal ball and back in Chops to stay there as they’ve been scoring more consistently of late and percentage is key. For the double chance spot that’s still up for grabs, Pool Swimmers has the easiest assignment in Crowmags but there’s a fair chance that all four teams on 11 wins get rolled and Picnic hang on by percentage as the other three play the top three sides who have gapped the field at this stage. Early promotion call it’s hard to go past Butters and the Indians with Zed the unlucky side who will have to try again next season

That’s the preliminaries out of the way for Division I with a cooked PorterGuns not being able to force their way into the eight and a just as cooked Petracca’s Picnic who lost the double chance in the last round when Pool Swimmers held on to defeat Crowmag. The Indians are clearly the standout side in this league and on current form would be good enough to win the Premier League. After multiple finals failures at this level, 2024 is eddie’s year. Full marks to the unlucky Richo Richo who dodged the wooden spoon, a wooden spoon he didn’t deserve seeing as CoverKing finished 7th on scoring in the league. From this point on it is all about scoring power, not whether you have the double chance or not. Indians have both as does ZedForce, but Chops Clots has re-emerged as a strong contender on the back of some recent high scoring. While the minor premier Butters has the wins on the board, they haven’t been outscoring Pool Swimmers, ZedForce, Chops Clots, or even Cowpokes so a straight sets out for Butters is on the cards. What do you expect when you name your side after a Power player. In this week’s finals I’m liking Pooly to sink Butters and as I said above no one is beating the Indians so Zed is dead baby. I reckon Petracca can end their recent run of outs to knock out the Creeps and in my view the Cowpokes won’t be able to make Chops out of the Clots.

Finals Week One

Qualifying Finals

HeadButters 2573
Pool Swimmers 2553

eddieslittleindians 2546
ZedForce 2507

Elimination Finals

Petracca's Picnic 2399
Coromandel Creeps 2309

Cowpokes 2519
Chops Clots 2309

The Indians have had a poor finals record and this season they look like they’ve got it right but it must have been a tense weekend on the Reservation as ZedForce went within 39 points of bringing up some horrible ghosts for the tribe. In the other quallie, HeadButters took no notice of my pessimistic predictions for his side as they hung on to sink Pooly by a mere twenty points in yet another high-quality final at this level. The Cowpokes were also impressive as they smashed a Chops Clots team whose scoring power deserted them at the wrong time of the season. The Clots are stuck in Divvy I for another season. While most of the league put in some top scoring this was not evident in the other knockout final as Petracca’s Picnic broke through for their first win in six weeks to knock out the Creeps, although neither side was racking them up. Next week I reckon Pool Swimmers will knock off the Picnic and I’m backing in Zed to knock off the Cowpokes in what will be the closer of the two semis. At this stage Butters and Indians are one win away from Premier League, and the other finalists are two short.

Semi Finals

Pool Swimmers 2549
Petracca's Picnic 2285

ZedForce 2380
Cowpokes 2307

The top four doesn’t always get through to the Prelims intact in SuperCoach but this is what has happened in Division I in 2024. Cub’s improved season ended at the hands of a mighty Pool Swimmers combination that was far too good as they romped to a 164-point victory. It was closer in the other final but ZedForce deservedly won through to the prelims as they got the better of Cowpokes. So the best four sides are now playing off for the two Premier League spots on offer. Minor premier HeadButters now faces ZedForce and Butters has shown they have the scoring power to keep up with the Jonses. With the carnage this week I’m thinking scorers may be lower but with a week off Butters might be in a position to better cover the outs than Zed. I think the same applies to eddieslittleindians who should finally make their Premier League debut next season. The Indians don’t need any advantage the way they have been travelling lately and I reckon they have the scoring power to sink Pooly. It would be a cruel loss indeed if Pooly was to get past the tribe and return to Premier League next season.

Preliminary Finals

HeadButters 2481
ZedForce 2285

Pool Swimmers 2375
eddieslittleindians 2358

If we had a Hogg Shield Awards season like they do in the AFL, MAY-Z would be a lay down misere to win the ‘You don’t have to be dead to be stiff’ award as his mighty Indians somehow failed to gain promotion to the Premier League yet again. The carnage crippled the high flying Indians whose ‘all in’ approach with a very good squad was shut down as the carnage hit him in the lines where he didn’t have coverage, in the ruck and in the backline. But for all that, the Indians were game and Pooly only just fell over the line with a 17 point victory that would make a grown Indian cry. In terms of a lack of coverage, it was a similar story for Zed who also copped the rough end of it as Pooly completed a comfortable victory. Zed’s dead baby as the line goes. Unlike the lower grades where promotions are currently being handed out like how to vote cards, only two go up so a couple of coaches here probably don’t want to talk SuperCoach right now. This leaves HeadButters and Pool Swimmers as newly minted Premier League coaches with a flag up for grabs. I’ve been a little dirty on Butters who are behind nearly all the other title contenders in scoring but they did top the ladder and have been scoring well lately and to me Pooly looks about a hundred short. I’m finally tipping HeadButters but this won’t worry Pooly as I gave his opponent the kiss of death last week too.

HeadButters by 77 pts.
