These are old Mobil cards, circa 64. ( I hope I've mastered the technology here to add them to the post)

Wish I had kept all my old copies of the Footy Times, from about 79-87. The great Ashley Hornsey (nowadays sports editor at the NT news in Darwin) gave me my start doing amateur footy reports. No pay, but a free copy every week.

Roger, I can concur on having your early work. I'm glad I've got all the copies of my stuff from when I wrote for the Football Budget in 97.

Thanks Tim Boylan.

I miss footy writing, but am pretty certain I'll be getting back into it this year. Which I'm very happy about.

Only get to do limited bits of writing these days, because the job doesn't really allow it (conflicts of interest)

Former life was lots and lots of writing -- mainly cricket, with bits of footy and basketball -- and was fun but eventually the travel took its toll.

If I get my wish for an afterlife, I will come back as a Sheffield Shield cricket writer and SANFL writer for the period 1970 - 1990. Nothing better than sitting at Shield games for four days as the quality of cricket is usually v v good (without the pressure of writing the Test beat) whilemost of my posts would show I'm hopelessly biased towards a particular era of footy and players.

Tim Boylen -- gave a lot of young blokes their start. Had a group of my crew all spend bits of time writing for the Budget.

Classic commentary on channel 9 with Ian Aitken and Wally May, the old classic from Aitken, Comment Wally May, May would not comment, Aitken replies, great comment wally.

And the days of ringing 1188 to hear your favourite footballer tell you all about himself and his club

Max Hall was the third stooge of this very underrated comedy team.
I have the 1973,74 and '75 Grand Finals where these three did the call.
I had to watch these games a couple of times before I could appreciate
the contest, because it took me while to get past the commentary.
HILARIOUS!
BTW, are any of these guys still with us?

I'm pretty sure Ian Aitken is still with us, i reckon he'd be a bit younger than the other names mentioned. I used to like Aitken's commentary actually, i reckon the guys from the 70's and 80's were great - Peter Marker, Ian Day, Gerry Harrison, David Darcy etc

Max Hall was inducted into the SA Football Hall of Fame this year. I actually saw him (and Ian Day) on their way into the members at Footy Park on Grand Final Day.

This is from FootySA. I didn't realise he was an umpire, and umpired a Grannie to boot.

MAX HALL
After an outstanding umpiring career he played a significant role in television's presentation of SA football.
UMPIRING RECORD: ♦ Field Umpire for 80 games 1953 – 1956 ♦ Grand Final Umpire 1955 ♦ Australian Championships Umpire (SANFL’s representative) 1953 & 1956 ♦ President Umpires Association
MEDIA CAREER: ♦ Football commentator Radio 5KA 1958-1971 ♦ Channel 9 Football Show Compere 1966-1979 ♦ Solo hosted Magarey Medal Presentation ♦ Co-hosted Magarey Medal Presentation with Kevin Crease ♦ Chief Commentator with Ian Aitken, Ted Langridge, Bob Shearman and Wally May - “Comment Wally May” on Channel 9 replays became the catchcry of the 70s As testament to his professionalism his colleagues offer the following: ♦ Max was an “ideas man”, helping develop how football was covered in the electronic media – he was prepared to ask “why not do this?” ♦ Max broke new ground when he recommended that Fran Shearman (wife of the late Bob Shearman – SAHOF member) interview Sturt ruckman Rick Davies on his farm ♦ Max was considered one of the best on radio – he hosted 2 weekly shows and appeared on “Stump the Sports”

Ian Day -- O What a Balltearer. One of the great quotes after a state game

Rog, You've missed some of our earlier chats about Daysie:

"Tango's once, tango's twice"
"Oooo he ducks the chutney"
"its a perfect day here at headquarters as umpire Foster/Mead/Schofield/Kinnear/Argent bounces the ball"

Bring back the brown channel nine blazers, with the fawn slacks I say circa 1981
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Sorry about that. I'll have to do a re-read. One of the highlights when he came to the school's training session one night and the kids asked for a tip and he gave the sage words:
"Good players kick with both feet but great players can drop kick with both feet"

Not sure the U10s coach was that happy though when everyone began trying left foot droppies that weekend and a fair few of us even failed to connect with the ball as we tried to kick.

Particularly the Footy Times poster. You knew they were running low on ideas once the player poster just had the guy kneeling holding the footy. Usually saw that one by about round nine

Ahhhh The Hatchet, what a wise old sage.

The Footy Times was a wonderful publication. One of the reasons why I chose my career path. always wanted to write for it when growing up.

Anyone remember 5PBH covering Ingle Farm games back in the late 80s?
