Sturt's best player in the last 50 years.

Postby sturtpeter » Wed Oct 24, 2007 11:50 pm

A very difficult choice.

About to turn the magical 50, I have fond memories of many past Sturt heroes.

My late dad's favourite was No. 16, Brenton Adcock, closely followed by Bagshaw and Rick Davies.

Mine is: Jade Sheedy. A product of the Mildura Area, Jade has shown exceptional loyalty to the SFC and has been probably our most consistent player since his Debut 7 years agoi. I also have a very soft spot for the late Brendon Howard, a past Sturt Captain.

Brendon and Janice leased about 6 of my family's pacers and I'm thrilled to announce my last Mare, Oriental Swinger is in foal and about to have, hopefully a sound foal.

Go U Blues! :)

Surely the best player in the last 50 years for Sturt has to come from Bagshaw or Davies? Be honest sturtpeter Sheedy might be the best bloke in the world in your eyes but as a footballer there is no way he could be the best for Sturt in the last 50 years. I guess it depends the criteria you use though.

Didn't SP start a thread on the main SANFL forum about "Your club's favourite player" in which he named Sheedy?

He clearly is stalking Sheedy with his over the top "admiration" (tempted to use other terminology) for him.

How many more topics can SP start in the off season that are just an excuse for him to declare his love for all things double blue!

Rick Davies -- bloke you always feared the most as a Norwood supporter. Could do it all in the ruck and then at the end of his career started kicking bags of goals.
I enjoyed watching Motley the most, but Davies was the one who would beat you the most.
Roger Woodcock -- 602 goals from a forward flank makes you a legend.

Rick Davies for mine (as Max Hall would say).

Sadly I can't see any votes happening for Dudley Ah Chee or Clinton Giles or Gary Argus...

1/ - Bagshaw
2/ - Davies
3/ - Sandy Nelson.
There you go,someone out of leftfield.
He & Bagshaw are the only two to play in every Sturt premiership side from 1966 to 1976.
Had to be pretty decent to to that.
If one person does it, it's insanity. If millions do it, it's religion.

Sandy Nelson was a star and I've also been very impressed with Ben Nelson over the years - that family has given a lot to the Sturt Football Club.

Simon Dennis for mine......

I'm not old enough to remember Baggy play, although I did, but I can't seperate Rick Davies, Michael Graham and Peter Motley.

Noel Pettingill -- best kick of a football who ever played for Sturt (or Norwood, or anybody)

He just didn't get enough of it, but regularly would barrel the ball enormous distances or kick drop punts from 60 with the ease of Quinlan.
Roger Woodcock -- 602 goals from a forward flank makes you a legend.

On a serious note, my favourite Sturt player of all time would be John Paynter, although an oppositon player i certainly enjoyed his precise skills. Unfortunate for him in a way that he missed Glenelg's success in the mid 80's but he'll certainly go down as a favourite son at Sturt.
