Labor, Liberal, Greens, Democrats? Here's the place to discuss.

actually they were going up hours before the election was called, and i think State electoral laws actually state 48 hours, i'm not sure about federal ones. (however councils/electoral commissions are awfully slack in enforcing it)

and as to their effectiveness, in seats where both candidate and incumbent are well known they are pointless, however where one candidate is well known and the other is virtually unknown by the electorate, they are very handy in building name recognition amoung electors. They also benefit the larger minor parties who can use corfluting as a way of reaching most of the electorate when they cannot afford to direct mail every household.

How about getting rid of them and thereby reducing the amount of money political parties get from getting their quota of votes? In the end they're funded by taxpayers because the parties get a s***load of money when they reach a certain vote.

How about getting rid of most of the pollies and really saving money - say one national government, maximum 100 seats and 20 seats scattered about the country up for election each year. That should also make TV advertising useless, and encourage success for local candidates, who know and are loyal to the people in their electorates rather to any party machine.

Ahh... saying that reminds me of the time I looked Alexander Downer in the eye and told him we had made two mistakes in 1901 - federation, and agreeing to pay politicians at all. I have changed my mind on the federation issue.

thats close to the dumbest thing ive ever heard, if we didn't pay politicians then the only people that could afford to do the job would be establishment w***ers like downer.

Yes, I was joking, and Alexander joked in return. However, prior to 1901 our politicians were unpaid, yet they appear to have done a good job.

I think altruism may have been more common then than now, but there are still some people who volunteer to serve the community. I'm no longer one of them - I have become cynical with time as people have become more "gimmee gimmee gimmee" around me.

Now of course there are those lining up for a career opportunity better paid than most of the community with little intention to serve anyone but themselves.

No, Alexander is not independently wealthy - he would need to work elsewhere if he wasn't a pollie. My log cabin in the Adelaide Hills was bigger and fancier than his!

I meant if he had not already become a pollie! :D

Anyway, he has just written me a nice reference about my excellent character, and our friendship, asking the UK government and the Australian embassies to do their best to assist me in every way while I am overseas in 2008-09, so I shan't begrudge him his super!

You're obviously saying nice things about him because you think he might read this and take away your reference ;)

Just spent a week around Perth.

Not a corflute on a pole anywhere (& we covered a fair bit of territory).

Must be the local rules.

It's in one of the safest Labor electorates in australia, Stawb, so it's a waste of time spending money on it.

I was out Mawson Lakes way last week and saw Bob Day's Posters. They are the worst i have seen, walking in front of a falcon ute and wearing a "man bag" Why must liberal candidates eg. Harbison, Birmingham and now Day suddenly feel the need to purchase a brand new ute prior to the election.Mysteriously Liberal was written in miniscule writing in the corner.

He has had new posters up in the last few days with photos of people saying they will vote for him. Safe to say he hasn't spared any expense during the campaign, with the shopping list pads and stupid blue rulers (which feature in one of his posters), and large glossy leaflets in our letterboxes. If elected, he could be the most expensive member of parliament in the country.
