So Maynard goes to the tribunal for an accident which could get a 3 game penalty but an intentional elbow to the face gets 1 game.
Footy is fugged if Maynard gets a game much less 3.

McStay played out the rest of the game, Brayshaw got knocked out cold & was stretchered off.

But what action is worse?
Jumping for a smother or raising an elbow to the head

You describe it poorly but definitely the first one.
You can't contact with a player after they get rid of the ball but you can contest a loose ball.
Players are at their most vulnerable just after kicking the ball and should be protected (and are by the rules).
It's even a penalty in union and league where the incidental contact of the 2nd incident would be play on.
There's a reason for it.
The 2 incidents are pretty straight forward
Van Rooyen 1 week. Careless/ high/ medium impact
Maynard 3 weeks + Careless/high/severe impact

Depends on your opinion of large but either way ptilopody would be a better way of describing them.
