That's lead me on a course of trying to stay as fit as possible - not always possible given injuries, age, etc. So I think I can talk from experience. Anyway....
Asthma is tough. My son was 1 when he was suffering symptoms of what I thought was asthma. Turned out, he would only get asthma after getting sick - ie a head cold. That's not typically 'asthma'. Despite my son going through the 120 breaths per minute on the way to the Womens and Childrens, I sided with the doctors to start with when they treated him with asthma medication but said he wasn't asthmatic. I remember pleading with the doctors (stupidly) to put him on asthma preventative as we had him admitted maybe 9 times over the course of a winter. Now I look back and say the doctors were right in saying that he wasn't asthmatic. We pushed them into allowing him to have preventative, wrongly.
Asthma can be triggered by random things. For me, as a kid it was triggered by fruit cup cordial - I was the only one allowed milk at kindy. I found out years later that it was the preservatives in the cordial that did it. Still to this day, it does. Having a bourbon and coke in a premix does it too. Cut grass used to do it for me as well. Pollen does it too. What this results in, is breathing 'up and down'. Not necessarily just shortness of breath (hence your doctor possibly saying you need your heart checked). That sounds odd but if you watch yourself breath, you breath with your chest, 'in and out'. Breathing up and down means you are heaving for air, even standing still. Your diaphragm moves up and down rather than in and out. Traditional medication alleviates the need to breath up and down and returns you to breathing - in and out.
As you can see from above, this didn't equate with a trigger that my son suffered from. He used to take ventolin on occasion but has weened himself off. During illnesses he still gets chest issues - Croup which leads to asthma type symptoms but not asthma itself.
So in short, go with the specialists. It doesn't sound like you've got asthma. But ultimately it doesn't matter whether you've got it or not, as long as you're treated according to your symptoms and you get relief.
Best of luck and keep us posted.

Wow, that escalated quickly. I think a second opinion would be in order. I think you're doing the right thing mate, all the best.
