Agreed people from clubs need to remember, as I have tried to say that past players from their clubs have committed similar acts so they need to remember that when criticising James. However that doesn't detract from what was done and one hopes the tribunal deals with it in the same way past famous incidents have - plenty of games.

What I can't understand for a man with footy smarts, what was he thinking??? The game was done and dusted if he was taunted or collected late just prior to the incident (not saying he was) surely the smart thing to do is get up smile, point to the scoreboard and give an almighty serve about losing a GF? There just is no comeback to that!!!
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Anyone who compares this to Sims is dreaming.
Schubert ran off the ground, wasn't carried off and taken to hospital.

Still doesn't excuse what James did but come on, let's get realistic here.

One woman on the radio said he should be stripped of his medal, silly cow.

But wasn't the Sims/Fitzsimmons incident near the ball, whereas what Gowans' was off the ball (ie a king hit). Not sure your claim stands up.

What was he complaining about when he was getting sent from the ground and reported - that Schubert hit him? Dude, you're 50 points in front, the grand finals' over, why hit him in the first place? It'd be one of those instances where if Schubert said something to him to provoke it, you just turn to the scoreboard and point (and perhaps laugh).

He should get 8, absolutely no need for that action in the dying minutes of the GF.

BP it is not what the consequence of the incident is, it is the incident itself....

From a person who knows my club's players in the past have done similar acts and worn the consequences it getting onto the severity of punishment as what was a received following what happened in the incident depicted in my avatar....

Doesn't matter if the ball is there or not, a king hit is a king hit,
Im just saying it's not as bad as Sims, my opinion only.

we dont need that s***t in our game, if that was my son getting smashed i would jump the fence to get retribution, i wanted cedntral to win as they deserved it but for j gowans to come up with that sort of crap in the last minute of the game has left me livid

So you don't condone what Gowans did on one hand but then go on to say you would seek retribution!

Yep I have

My point is I don't think it was as bad as Sims, that's all.
Like I said that's just my opinion.

Gowans will get a decent suspension

All other things being equal a behind the play hit will always result in more games suspension than one that isn't. Its the reason why the AFL takes into consideration whether the hit is/isnt behind play when deciding on a suspension.

what if gowans retires & could legal action be taken ?

Postby bayman » Sun Oct 07, 2007 9:31 pm

if he retires, which would make the (if any) suspension useless, should he then be made to pay a fine ? & could he face an assault charge ?

i think an assault charge will be likely after talking to a cop at the glenelg footy club tonight
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

I think it deserves at least 8 weeks. One of the most cowardly acts I've ever seen and to do it at the time he did with his team so far in front was senseless. Nothing short of a disgrace. Will tarnish James' reputation forever. Should not be mixed up with Chris, who isn't as much of a hot-head as his twin.

Nothing will happen, IMO. Well, ok, not my opinion, I just can't see anything happening. Nothing came about Lynch retiring after 2004, and getting 10 weeks overall.

Very unlikely, would only possibly occur if Schubert suffered severe injuries that could result in ongoing impairment.
