It's still one of the few 'mans' sports still around. I don't think there are any more technical or strategical sports getting around. The passion of the players during national anthems is next level.

Until you understand the athletism and technique required by these beasts of human beings it hard to appreciate. These blokes are 6ft plus over 120kg and can get their head to toes hit the deck and back up to the next contest in seconds for another big hit. Even getting your head low (roughly around knee height) to make tackles is pure craziness when you have a 120kg bloke running at you and tackles a huge mental shift from playing aussie rules and the much easier technique of upright tackling.

Had to laugh after watching Argentina vs France first half which was just a battle of warriors to then flick on the AFL and within 10 seconds see a GWS player diving from a flick to the neck holding his head and receiving a free kick, haven't seen that bad in the EPL this season.

Is that the game where they run one way but throw the ball the other?

All jokes aside once you know the rules and you have played and understand what is and isn't allowed it's pretty easy to see what decisions the ref's are making.

TBH it's no different for someone who watches AFL the first time and cant understand why a free is being giving for chopping the arms in a marking contest.

To break it down really simply when 10 people jump on the ball (A Ruck) there are a few rules.

Defense- The tackler must role away after completing the tackle, if they don't role away the ref calls tackler not releasing

- if there looking to 'steal' the ball the defender must grab it whilst still being on his feet. If he is laying there and he grabs it then he will be penalised from playing off his feet.

Attack- The attacker must release the ball within a few seconds of hitting the deck (think no different to holding the ball the ball in football) If he fails to release he is then penalised. This like AFL is a ref perceived time.

All players from both sides must enter a ruck from the back, if they come from the side it is simply 'come from the side' penalty.

Once in the ruck you can push/grab however you like you provided you don't grab the head.

Yeah fair call.

You won't see the little hands on the ball etc but you know where the tackled player is so you know where he is going to be releasing the ball therefore where to look. No real different to watching a ball up in AFL.

If there is a penalty in the ruck its normally given in the first few seconds of a ruck forming.

There is no scarier moment in any sport any where in the world than being the first man over the top of your teammate who has just been tackled.

It's your role to get in as low of a positon as possible, with your hands over his head, head down arse up to protect him. You look up and you know a defenders is just going to storm straight at you and push you off your teammate to get the ball.

You just have to stay as low as possible and trust that if your low enough when he tries to hit you he will be hitting over the top.

You can imagine the delight of a 120kg Fijian lads when they see me leant over my teammate protecting them

If we are getting serious for a second I can understand why not all people see the thrill in union, if you don't know what your looking for the sport is ridiculous. Just like I love test cricket but can appreciate why people would passionately hate it.

For me I love watching tactics, technique, strategy in sport which is no surprise my 3 favourite sports are test cricket, soccer and union.

Out of all sports union is so unique in that literally every body shape, weight, height, can not only participate but play an extremely crucial role in the side. That can be hardly said about sports such as soccer and aussie rules.

Union still very much has a case of each team/country/club has their own style of union they play. The easiest way to compare union strategy is to that of boxing where you have to different teams trying to dictate and influence their style of play dependent of their strengths. If you are team relying on your backs to get the ball out wide you are in all sorts of trouble if the others teams forwards dominate you and don't allow it so then you might have to resort to a kicking game to 'open' the game up.

In saying that I love the all action scoring of the AFL and speed and coverage of the players. I have always been impressed by their kicking skills.
