Agree boys Marsh is a dud plain and simple. More parochialism it seems. Another factor is that Cricket Australia have invested so much in this guy and they are most reluctant to declare the investement as a failure. He is running out of time though as he's been given a chance in a dead rubber.

Head's technique this series has been terrible. Plants his front foot straight down the pitch against right armers bowling around the wicket, leaving a huge gap between bat and pad. I watched him the other night and thought it was only time before he got given out LBW, inside edge/bowled or bowled. I was right.

I don't disagree with you but Warner is 32 and averaging less than 10. He can't even leave the ball at the moment without edging it.

It’s not a dead rubber though. Winning the series is better than drawing it. It’s also worth points towards the World Test Championship

We will win anyway. They've shortened their batting order as well. Very kind of them.

Warner in the last 4 tests has made 79 @ 9.88

There might be others, but the one that jumps to mind is Shaun Marsh in 2018.

3rd test in newlands: 26,0
4th test at Wanderers: 16, 7
1st test vs Pakistan in dubai, 7, 0
2nd test vs Pakistan 3, 4

63 runs at 7.88 puts him comfortably ahead (behind?) Warner for the worst slump.

Marsh was still retained for the first test in Australia, vs India at Adelaide Oval, dismissed for 2 in the first innings too.

If you include the 1 he got in the second dig of the 2nd test in South Africa, and the 2 he got in the first at Adelaide Oval, Marsh went 10 consecutive test innings for 66 runs at an average of 6.6

This series has been very ugly for averages.
Smith 671 @ 134.2 (115)
Labia 291 @ 58.2 (52.3)
Wade 201 @ 25.1 (13)
Head 191 @ 27.28 (23.3)
Paine 158 @ 22.6 (16.7)
Khawaja 122 @ 20.3 (16.4)
Warner 79 @ 9.9 (2.6)
Pattinson 69 @ 23 (7.3)
Cummins 62 @ 12.4 (7.2)
Starc 57*
Lyon 54 @ 18 (9.3)
Siddle 53 @ 26.5 (9)
Harris 46 @ 11.5 (9)
Bancroft 44 @ 11 (9.3)

In the brackets are their averages minus highest score for the series.

In fairness to the selectors there not working with a whole lot in the case of replacing Warner.

There options are:

Move Labuschagne to opener- this would be a disaster, he has finally found a spot in the line up and is starting to look the goods.

Bancroft- Currently in moderate form at absolute best, is 27 years old so his not exactly the 'future'. Has already had 18 innings with an average of 26 an no tons so not exactly showing great prospects. Comes with a first class average of 39 so hardly a world beater at that level.

Khawaja- The bloke is in terrible form himself and has an even worse overseas and English record than Warner.

Selectors are better of giving the one bloke they know at his best can be a world class cricketer another chance, let him come and swing the bat and if it works well you may just have added another worldy to your line up. Worst case he fails, we retain the ashes, next summer the selectors pick the opener in the shield hitting the most runs.

It's always an upgrade if you are bringing in two players to replace one. I thought it was Woakes for Roy, Curran for (Overton?) to reverse the mistake they made in Manchester. No way is Woakes a big upgrade with the bat over Roy, he's been worked out. Curran is a player but I didn't realise he'd been selected.

Curran (Or Pattinson for that matter) over Marsh any day of the week! Looking forward to seeing how he goes against the Aussies.

If only we had a keeper that could bat a bit. He moves to 6, Pattinson is good enough to bat 7 and we can do away with a Marsh forever, bonus of 5 genuine bowlers.
I agree with the notion that there is a lot of blokes here with their SA goggles on. Head has been that far out of his depth on this tour. Does not handle the moving ball at all like all other SA batsman before him.

Even stranger by bringing in Marsh for bowling support and Siddle who is a more defensive bowler than Starc

Hopefully Tim Paine made the right decision , time will tell
2 things against sending EG in are
Nathan Lyon one of the greatest performed off spinners for Australia wont be bowling in the 4th dig
Pat Cummins has to back up a bit earlier , after AU bowled last in the 4th test a few days ago

Travis Head very very unlucky to be dropped
Numerous times he has rescued Australia when AU have been in trouble in his test career
If you average out his good and bad, the good should have had him in the team

You're being kind Jim, Paine has once again shown himself to be a ******* idiot. Apart from being an excruciating example of overthinking things, it's such negative cricket.

Surely Paine’s just a puppet though.
Langer is in charge of this ship with Smith right behind him.

And strange after Paine highlighted the workload of the bowlers in this series in his press conference yesterday as to why they brought in Marsh. If they're worried about the bowlers workload surely then you'd want to give the bowlers as much rest as possible by batting first if you win the toss?

Bowling first seems contradicting, time will tell.

We have to knock them over for 150-180 to justify this decision. Win the toss, you fu**en bat.
