They've done it before. My guess before was that it was because he previously played with Crows, common sense would say if they hate the Crows then they'd cheer the fact he's with another club but they aren't very bright.

Essendon fans will boo any ex Carlton player as rule no matter who they play for. Even ones that have played for us [emoji3]
It’s actually a very English tradition to boo players of your most hated rivals even when they move clubs.
