Re: Port Adelaide 2018
Port Adelaide vice-captain Ollie Wines has recommitted to the club in a long-term deal which will see him remain with the Power until the end of 2022.
The 23-year-old came to Alberton with the seventh pick in the 2012 AFL National Draft and has played 119 games since debuting against Melbourne in Round 1, 2013.
Wines was the fastest player to reach 50 AFL games for the Power and in 2015 he took home a third consecutive Gavin Wanganeen Medal, recognising him as the Power’s best player under the age of 21.
In 2018, Wines has upheld his reputation as one of the game’s leading inside midfielders while demonstrating leadership and maturity beyond his years.
“This club has done everything right by me and my family since it welcomed me into the club six years ago,” Wines said.
“I have a firm belief in where the club is heading, the playing group it’s formed and the support off-field, and I am looking forward to the future.
“My position, and the club’s position, throughout our discussions has been that we have been in a good space and it was only a matter of time before I signed on again.”
Port Adelaide’s General Manager – Football, Chris Davies said he was thrilled to have Wines recommit.
“Ollie is a great player, a brilliant young leader, and a popular member of the Port Adelaide community,” he said.
“We see his signing as a significant commitment to Port Adelaide’s football program and a belief in the direction the club is heading.”
His long-term commitment staves off the threat of AFL free agency, which he would qualify for at the end of 2020.

I didn't think this was in doubt was it?
Although big offers coming from Melbourne it was more about the media saying he'd be a good fit rather than them talking about them being a destination.

I know we were very interested and could have offered him more than he is currently on but to Ollie and his managers credit they informed the club pretty early on that he would be staying and it allowed us to start looking elsewhere. He could have strung us along like some players and managers do

Quality individual is Wines. Very confident our club has the right leadership group in place on field, just need to tidy up our off field reputation.

Yeah he’s definitely quality and why many clubs wanted him.
He was never leaving Port though.
Anyone know what sort of coin he signed on for?
Must have been at least $800k a year?

4 years, I'd say $3.2-$3.5m across the 4 years so $800-875k per year which for us on real wages is ( at $800k ) $15,384 per week or, $2197.80 per day.
S'oright money, I guess.

I got my deck out and popped a few Ollies, even a front side manual that I didn't think I would still be able to do.

Plus throw in his match payments of $4,500.00 per game on top of that (which will increase next year). Big coin

Yes you do. He'll get match payments each game he plays on top of that.

I always thought the 800k per year for 4 years they quote in these sort of deals is normally an estimated figure, because it is dependent on number of games played.
IE: He would actually be on 700k base load plus $4,500 per game, estimated at 20 games = $790,000 estimated.
I could be well off though!
Danny Southern telling Plugga he's fat, I'd like to see that!

The amount they sign up for does not include match payments. If he has signed for $800 - $870k as some suggest, then he would get match payments on top of that, however, if people are factoring in match payments as well, he is in fact signing up for approx $700k a year. From my knowledge of players at AFL Clubs, they receive match payments on top of their contract

Re: Port Adelaide 2018
I simply cant decide on Port v Melbourne. IMO 2 very evenly matched sides on the big stage where Melbourne have failed previously and being played in Adelaide is what is swaying me to pick Port. Looks some fantastic match ups;
Ryder v Gawn - Will have a huge outcome on the result
Wines, SPP, Rocky, Ebert v Viney, Jones, Oliver, Salam- Jesus no place for the faint hearted in these match ups! Be great to watch....
TJ, Hombsch v Hogan, McDonald
Dixon v McDonald
Gray v Jetta and Probably Thomas or S.Gray v Hibbard
Then whilst these wont be match ups i see these as almost 'like for like' type match up's
Wingard v Petracca
Westy v Melksham
Polac v Brayshaw
For mine some very even contests right across the board. The weakness i do see in the Melbourne side is the lack of leg speed across half back in Lewis and Vince, whilst both very smart footballers we must expose there lack of leg speed.
Port $1.54 v Melbourne $2.42 (Much closer than that IMO)
But with all this being said I'm going Port by 14 points.
