You can lead a horse to water mate..... and by that time it's too late anyway - he should've taken the water and food about 5-10km back and kept hydrating.

How was he to know how far ahead he was? What's to say that he wouldn't have also collapsed if he'd stopped - and lose gold for what?

It would've taken every little bit of focus he had just to get himself over the line without collapsing, let alone worrying about anyone else.
