Which clubs are going to let their players play this rubbish and not get them resting and in rehab for the following season?

Agree MW.
First thing I thought of when this was mentioned was SOO and why we don't have that anymore.

Depends what prize money is up grabs

If money doesn't work winter season concessions could be put on the line ala round 1 draft pick for the winners etc

The AFL haven't put all this money into the concept to let it fail because the stars won't play

I'm amazed the players union would agree to participating in this.
AFLX would be a pretty good money grab for the AFL though, make no mistake.
This format would set itself up more for draftees, recently delisted players and mature-age player - but after the season - which would be good for maintaining that post-season market share the AFL has been craving.
I've often thought the next stage of the AFL's campaign to maintain market share is a Masters-type competition, featuring players 35 to 45, which would fill the gap after Christmas and up to the AFLW starting.

Could be a good idea DW regarding delisted players and potential draftees. If it were like the T20 then they could nominate themselves and then be shuffled into franchises and it could be a chance to showcase the available talent prior to the draft...

So SANFL/WAFL/VFL clubs about to embark on a finals campaign will release their star players to some AFLX?

Surely the market dictates this? As in, if only a minority of the population enjoy cricket and the rest of us want to see AFLX, who is anyone to deny that?

this could potentially work - something in the pre-season when grounds still arent available

most of us might be against it but really, if it was on in summer and didnt affect the rest of the footy, would most of us watch it I would.

Obviously the market does dictate it, but I believe that 100 years of history has shown there is enough market each for the two to work in unison like they have done for all of our lives.

The problem we have is the market is very easily influenced and manipulated with in many cases the bigger the marketing budget the easier to influence opinion. Throw in the fact that no doubt the AFL will 'undercut' the market ala free entry just like the women's comp knowing it's competition cannot compete on that level then you don't have. True indication of what your market actually wants.

Classic example being do you think the bigger market wants to see women's football over SANFL, I would guess to say there is more interest in the SANFL judging by the fact it can still get 40k to a grand final etc, throw in the AFL's marketing power/money etc and their ability to play games in premium time slots on not charge a cent to get in makes its the people choice to attend, but is that what 'the' market really wants. If they were given the choice to have free entry to their SANFL club or women's team what ticket would have been used more etc

If the AFLW started to charge the exact same prices as the SANFL do you think the attendance gap between the two would slightly close up (even by 1%) well then you have manipulated what the market wants through affordability

Like I said imo it would be very sad for sport in Australia if Aussie rules took 100% of the sporting calendar.
