I think South's heavy training load recently will count against them in this game.

Essentially the dogs don't care about the 2 points, it's more about the finals preparation. Of course, part of an ideal finals preparation is winning games, so the dogs will be eager to win this, follow the team plan, execute skills better than against North and while I don't expect them to run south of their legs, the boys should be expected to work a bit harder than the North game. Although getting over the flu might go some way to helping that! If we get Griffin back it will help immensely.

You will need him for sure because I think that without him your rucks look ordinary based on last Sat and that as supported with the hitout stats.

BP, our rucks looked just as bad in the GF that we beat the Eagles by 20 goals in, hitouts-wise at least. Central rucks have always been known for the work they do around the ground (particularly Buckets) rather than hit-outs. I think you will find that despite losing the hitouts, we tend to win our fair share of clearances. No good getting the hitout if the opposition takes it away.

I agree with what you are saying but I don't think even Centrals can afford to give up the ratio they did last week come finals against a good midfield - many of those hitouts were around the ground. I thought clearly we won the majority of clearances last week which has been rare of late - it did have something to do with Jimmy Allan coming back in!

It also doesn't help when your number one ruckman is in the Crows and your number two ruckman does his knee during the game.

No matter what the Centrals rucks do, you can be sure they dont finish a game with a combined stats tally of 1 kick, 1 mark and 7 handballs like our dominant duo.

A bit technical. Griffen is a Crows player - you can hardly call him your No. 1 Ruckman like we couldn't rely on or call Hudson our No. 1. Giles was a bit unlucky going down but that was late when the game had been sorted. Maybe Schell should have had a run in the ruck like Gilly does occasionally at North, Schell has a great vertical leap and is around 194 cm or so he could be a very good option IMO plus he could run back and fwd to mark and be very dangerous to run with and try and cover? You have enough other height in Grima, Lawry, Sibenaler, Havelberg and Hayes not to impact too much either up fwd or down back.

As G said our ruckman need to do more around the grounds. I thought both gave good second and third efforts re tackling etc in an daround the ruck contests but they do not take enough marks around the ground and it's got to the stage both won't even kick unless they have no other option.

Personally I don't give a stuff about hit outs. Most overrated stat in the history of the game IMHO. Hitouts to advantage tells a different story, and the SANFL ruckmen would have a couple a game at best. The dogs get excellent value out of MacKenzie around the ground, Giles is a good forward option and Griffin gets a lot of the ball on the ground. I'd happily lose the hitouts 40-10 with the contributions around the ground these guys give us. I still think the ruckmen are needed, but mostly to stop the opposition from getting many hit outs to advantage and generally get in the way of the other team.

Well said, Graham. My thoughts precisely! Lindsay won just about every tap in the GF which we won by 20 goals but virtually none were to advantage. I much prefer a ruckman like Buckets who gives so much around the ground with his marking, tackling etc.

BP, I include Griffen as one of our ruckman as once Hudson is back with the Crows, Griffen will drop back to us. As he is likely to play finals with us, it is reasonable to include him. Btw, there is a chance Westhoff could also be used in the ruck (on occasion) if the Power let him play for us.

I think this could well beat the 196 odd points we got flogged by a couple of years back.

We were shit then, but the situation wasn't quite this dire.
God help us.

I doubt it will be as bad as that. I would have thought a 10 goal win to the dogs would be the point at which you would be disappointed, and anything less something to build on. That game you were 1 player short the whole game, and that player happened to be your best player in dynamic form. Only reason Brogan was playing SANFL then was because Primus and Lade were holding the power spots. Brogan would get 30 touches and 10 marks each game it seemed. Losing him was a massive blow. Can't imagine you being unlucky enough to lose a player in the warm up this time.

Plus being a night game, and on a wet night at that, I don't think there will be a big margin.

'Captain Obvious' time, but the games may (should?) be seen as no more than good hard training runs, making the best of (possibly) having only one match in the five weeks leading (hopefully) into the Grand Final. Can't see the 'dogs taking South lightly, despite recent form.

Mate the only decent encounter you have in your run to the finals is Centrals v Sturt in Round 21, then the Legs and a Bye. Hardly what I would call great preparation for the finals, particularly when the 4 other contenders have tougher competition through the weeks.
Failure is only the opportunity to begin again more intelligently.

that was the dogs game plan once the eagles made the GF, they practiced that the week before the GF, not in veiw of the public though behind closed doors, and at one stage matt slade was going to ruck but how silly would that of looked  .

Griffen has been dropped from the Crows side for this week, quite timely I reckon.
