Port have produced one of the worse first quarters to a start to a year you will ever see

Only positive is that it's the first quarter of the year

Their 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarters are usually just as bad too

Saints should be 8 goals up.

Got ahead of themselves due to the non contest of a first quarter.

I'm at a bit of a loss what to take out of last nights game. I went with 3 other blokes, All knowledgeable blokes in terms of footy and all independents as supporters with the 3 following the Cats, The Hawks and Collingwood. Some points we all thought on last nights game.

- The standard of the game was absolute shithouse. 1st hit out maybe? Who knows

- Saints ran and spread in the 1st half was awesome, On the flip side of that when did port gain possession (very rare in the first term) it seemed the players dead set had concrete boots on, No movement what so ever. It was mark, go back kick over the mark down the line standard shit, No risk taking and breaking lines very ordinary ball movement and terrible skills.

- With out knowing any of the stats it seemed like we didn't win a clearance at all! The saints at stoppages were all on the move and Port players reminded me of fielders in the old board game test match.....

- Port players must hate Charlie Dixon, Dixon has been a whipping boy on here by plenty of blokes, Maybe his price tag or maybe just trolls I don't know but what I do know is, Kicking off one step and bombing on his head is simply not going to work he isn't Wayne Carey but Jesus I wish we'd help the bloke out a bit with delivery.

- Going in to the game I was interested to see Hartlett as indicated in a prior post and whilst he didn't get a lot of the footy, Hartlett's work rate and pressure was great and again with out knowing the stats I would say he would've topped the tackle count he did work hard.

- Powell-Pepper looks a ready made player strong, smart and smooth very much in the Ollie Wines mould.

- If Sam Gray can not become a '1 Touch' footballer he simply cant play in that side, Fumbles way to much.

- Man buns, F#@k me dead, Why just why.............

To be completely honest I actually fear how we might fare this year, I absolutely love Port Adelaide but on last night's performance I believe were in the 9th to 12th range :( seriously hope I'm wrong tho, Can Robbie Gray, Broadbent and Darcy make that much difference?

@carey

Clearances lost 30-26

Hartlett 6 tackles ( Wines 10 )

Don't take too much from last night mate, first hit out, like always a handful of blokes played who won't be there round 1, Ryder only half of footy in 18 months.

I only saw the 2nd half, Boak looked good, work rate looked like it was up, Wingard magic hands in the midfield might be a big positive, I like Karkouer in the front half, forwards will lead at him with confidence, will be better down back with Logan Austin in the side, like the Trengove move forward, gives Westhoff free reign, Wines, Powell-Pepper to combine as one of the better inside mid combinations in the game.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

What are fan's expectations for port this year?

From an outsiders perspective, I dont see too much to be optimistic about onfield. Will need career years out of Ryder, Dixon and Wingard to get anywhere close to challenging for finals imo.

Port's young brigade wouldnt have improved as much as they would have hoped.

10-14 wins. 14 might make the 8, anything less certainly won't.

We'll have a much more competitive midfield working at the feet of Ryder in the main and Trengove as support this year, without question.

First trial. In 2013 Port played Melbourne in a trial game in Renmark. James Sellar tore it up and kicked 5.

That season Port played a Semi and Melbourne finished 17th. James Sellar played 7 games and kicked 2 goals.

Enough Said.

Few E-Mails going around this morning with fellow Port supporters who are in the know. Most are worried, but as others have said, just a warm up really.
I expect to know more after the 3rd trial and definitely rd 1. We are building to be ready to go then (as is every side) and will ease the blokes into it. I'm worried Hinkley will go too top heavy and play Lobbe instead of Eddy in Round 1. Few things i took from last night:

Powell-Pepper, going to be huge for the team! Was very impressive last night, didn’t notice him much @ the Internal last week but was very good last night.
Ryder blowing out the cobwebs. As is Dixon. Reckon they will play all 3 games and build their minutes through each game to be ready for Round 1.

Backline very good, Clurey will play Round 1, Hombsch All Australian if fit all yr.

Midfield struggled as per usual (I missed most of the first quarter as well).
Forward line will gel in time but Trengrove looks good and can take a mark! Eddy very welcome inclusion!!

Heard Hinkley’s interview on the way to work this AM, said they haven’t done much match simulation, so reckon they will take the whole 3 games to get settled.
We looked like moving the ball okay, skills hadn’t improved though. Hoping they are good to go come the 3rd game

My Rd 1 team

FB – DBJ (if fit) otherwise Bonner, Austin (if fit) otherwise Jonas, Clurey
HB – Pittard, Hombsch, Hartlett
C – Polec, Wines, Westhoff (If he can’t play a wing, drop him and put a runner in) (I like Eddy more than him in our forward line).
HF – Ebert, Dixon, Boak,
F – Young, Trengove, Eddy
R – Ryder, Gray, Wingard
I/C – S Gray, Powell Pepper, Broadbent, Krakouer (Impey when he returns in Rd 2). If Krak gets a week, i reckon they will go Neade, but i'd rather Johnson

Next In Line – Bonner, Lobbe/Frampton (Lobbe has started well in the pre-season), Amon, Atley (Reckon he will play a few this yr), Johnson, Ah Chee, White (Depending on his fitness is in our best 22), Monfries, Neade.

Freo won all their NAB Cup matches last year, then only won 4 during the regular season.
Some coaches wouldn't even look at the scoreboard in these games.
Krakouer will get a couple.
