Accolades don't define a player and the impact they had on the game. In this instance it makes little difference as Lethal Leigh was so much more than Mitchell could ever hope to be. Matthews also kicked 915 goals.

He also ended Barrie Robran's career.

Not to mention being charged with assault by the police after his gutless snipe of Neville Bruns breaking his jaw.
Absolute grub of a man.

About '74 or '75, I think at the SCG in a state game Matthews skittled Robran and buckled Barrie's knee. The hit was late, nothing surprising with Lethal.

Robran had several operations (3 in 3 cities if I recall) and he played on until 1980, but he was never the same after the incident and never really got to any level of fitness because of it.

Not making excuses for that, or any other Matthews incident, but he was no lone soldier when it came to thuggery in that era. Like his football ability, he just executed his plans better than many others.

We all remember Balme, Dietrich, Muir etc as thugs, it's just that Matthews was a brilliant player to go with it where they, in the main, were not.

A real tragedy.
Robran played his first full season in 1967, and played about 160 games until mid 1974, during which he won North's best and fairest every year barring that final year where he was injured. He also won Magareys in 1968, 70 and 73. Absolutely incredible stats Imo.
After Leigh's late hit to the knee, he played just another 40 games until 1980. Some say it's amazing he even played again.

So Leigh Matthews is the first and the last person to be credited with busting someone's knee supposedly deliberately. Cool story.
Robran wasnt fit to tie Leigh's shoelaces. GOAT no question, 915 goals at what 5'7"? A bazillion B&F's at the best club in Australia at the time (and still is). Imagine how many Magareys Lethal would have won if he played in the tin pot league, Ebert and Robran together dont come close

There were far bigger thugs than Matthews running around in the SANFL in that era. It was just the done thing at the time.

Maybe up to and including the 1970s, but by the mid 1980s? At any rate, I'm not aware of any SANFL players charged with assault for snotting someone during a game.
