Bone McDermott in today’s rag “30K turned up to the SANFL Grand Final so this should silence any critics of the Crows and Power reserves sides”.

Uses the same simplistic logic as Guru Roo.

Brother Bone is a hard-working disciple of the Guru, and his role reflects his lack of mental acuity. He accepts his intellectual limitations, and gladly demonstrates this by continually speaking and writing in public.

His prime role is to assemble the Guru's banana lounge on hot days at the West Lakes Temple. Also, the Nineteenth Man regularly uses his face as an ashtray when important guests arrive. Unfortunately for Brother Bone, so does Brother Bone.

He obviously is challenged by thought of any kind, but I'm forever thankful for him forcing Damien Squire away from Prospect so that he could win Magareys and make a premiership at Sturt.
I can't believe he's got a gig as a footy writer given his obvious lack of footy acumen, or writing acumen for that matter.

North made plenty of bad decisions in the mid to late 90s, but getting McDermott as coach was arguably the worst. Couldn't coach a duck to float.

I thought the VFL said it didn't want the SA sides when this debate was brought up originally . If they have changed on this stance wouldn't a licence fee be imposed to cover the extra cost of travel ?? Plus the set up costs.

And what of Port ?? you think they want to leave the SANFL whilst avoiding any costs at all for a reserves side.

Or is the commission willing to give two seperate set ups for the almighty AFL sides.

I've seen some shithouse bluffs before AFC but consider the house called.

I read it as they hadn't won an SANFL flag, I also read into it that the Commission will rule on it and decide against the cap using non emotional data.

they are just pre empting things in case the delegates have the temerity to actually consider the cap. the crows get what they want remember, this is just their first step in making sure the cap doesnt happen. next comes alledged threats and intimidation

Better for the comp they are relegated to the bottom two or three teams in the SANFL than a real SANFL team isn't it? Especially given the supporters don't care and their main objective is not winning anyway. What team does Kelly propose finishing in the bottom two or three teams would be good for the competition?

Adelaide Crows reserves team may be forced to withdraw from SANFL competition

ADELAIDE could look to have its Crows reserves join the VFL or NEAFL if the SANFL introduces a cap on the number of AFL-listed players who can be fielded in the State league.

The SANFL has begun its annual review of AFL clubs Adelaide and Port Adelaide fielding AFL reserves teams in the State league — as demanded by the licence agreement. But this year there is extra pressure from the eight traditional SANFL clubs to introduce a cap on AFL-listed players named for State league action.

The SANFL wrote to both the Crows and Power last week to declare the question of “competitive balance” in the State league was again on the SA Football Commission agenda. The commission last year rejected the push for a cap that would have limited the number of AFL-listed players to between 12-15 in each of the Crows and Power reserves teams.

But the pushback from the eight traditional SANFL clubs is harder this year, particularly after the debate on AFL reserves teams in the State league became hot with Adelaide’s emphatic wins in the SANFL elimination final against Central District and first semi-final against South Adelaide — the two SANFL clubs that in August 2013 voted against AFL reserves team in their competition.

SANFL football chief Adam Kelly again has been charged with reviewing the AFL presence in the State league. The SA Football Commission must rule any change to the SANFL competition by the end of the October.

“By the licence agreement,” Kelly told The Advertiser, “there must be a review at the end of each season. That process has begun again.”

While the eight traditional SANFL clubs are determined to impose a cap on the Crows and Power reserves, the SANFL executive and commission is bound to ignore the emotional debate to — as Kelly put it — make an “evidence-based decision”. And three years of data is not delivering a convincing argument that the two SA-based AFL clubs are dominating the SANFL competition.

After three years of AFL reserves in the SANFL,
NO State league premiership has been won by an AFL reserves team. The best finish was Port Adelaide’s runner-up status to Norwood in the first year of the new model in 2014.
ADELAIDE has a 26-1-27 win-draw-loss record in the SANFL; Port Adelaide has a 34-20 count.
NO SANFL final series has involved both the Crows and Power reserves at the same time. The Port Adelaide Magpies qualified for SANFL finals in 2014 and 2015 but not this season. The Crows reserves played in their first SANFL final series this season and were eliminated by eventual premier Sturt in the preliminary final.
ADELAIDE’S record when loaded with 18 or more AFL-listed players is 9-4 (6-3 this season). By a strange contrast, the Magpies perform better when it had less AFL-listed players in its SANFL line-up.
ADELAIDE’S success this season was a byproduct of an unusually small injury list at AFL level. Even then, the Crows reserves did not make a top-three finish in the SANFL.

Adelaide’s concern with a cap on the number of AFL-listed players in the Crows reserves is what does the club do with “excess” players who cannot be selected for SANFL action. Unlike Port Adelaide, the Crows do not have an academy team in the SANFL reserves. Adelaide certainly does not want to farm out excess AFL players to amateur league clubs.

Crows football chief Phil Harper told The Advertiser a cap on AFL-listed players in the SANFL went against the very purpose of its reserves team.
“We asked for a team in the SANFL to keep all our players together — a cap works against that aim,” Harper said.

Adelaide has studied the cost of leaving the SANFL — where it pays a $420,000-a-season licence fee — to join the VFL and NEAFL where it would play without restrictions. There is an extra cost of $100,000 a season that the Crows would quickly accept to avoid conflict with the SANFL clubs — and to protect its football program.

The SANFL executive also is concern introducing a cap on the Crows and Power reserves would hurt the competitiveness of these teams.

The same debate on capping AFL-listed players is underway in the WAFL where Fremantle-supported Peel Thunder beat Subiaco at the weekend to put the WAFL premiership in the hands of an AFL reserves team.

But Kelly says there is one significant difference in the SANFL and WAFL models. In WA, West coast reserves team East Perth and the Dockers’ Peel Thunder not only have AFL players but can still recruit from the old East Perth and Peel zones. By contrast, the Crows and Power have to seek “top-up” players outside the traditional SANFL system and neither club has an SANFL recruiting zone.
