Jenkins vs O'Meara

Postby Fricky » Wed Jun 29, 2016 4:12 pm

Both players are apparently asking for $750K a season, or at least have been given that worth by their managers.

Who's worth closer to the mark?
Jenkins - finally having a good year of football, although as mentioned around the place he may struggle being the No 1 forward target.
O'Meara - touted as a future gun player, could be injury prone for the rest of his career.

Neither of them are even close.

$5-550k tops for them both and that would only be to lure them away from their current club. Staying put, $450-500k max.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Crows offered $600K to Jenkins. Problem for the Crows and Suns is that there are dud clubs like Brisbane and Richmond who would be more than happy to offer the $700-750 the managers have priced them at.

O'Meara seems likely to be back in Melbourne but which club who is within the "premiership window" would give up that much for him?

That was my only guess, recent news surrounding Hodge, Gibson, Burgoyne and Mitchell makes little difference, they'd be on much less now than they were in 12/13/14....and less again next year I presume.

Massive pick up for them as well. He is a good player at the moment and will ne a star. As long as he is past the injuries.

O'Meara hasn't played for nearly two years, why risk so much of a team salary cap on someone who may not even play

I guess you would be paying for his potential to become an absolute gun player. I wouldn't think that clubs would need to pay $750K to pull him out of the Gold Coast. What would he be on now? $400K?

O'Meara has the bigger upside but Jenkins is probably the safer option. Plus mobile big blokes are a rare breed. If O'Meara leaves Gold Coast then we can probably say officially that Gold Coast messed up their original drafting. Not that it was all their fault, but they haven't got much left from those early concessions and signings.

Not sure Hawthorn would have all that much being saved from their veterans. Only part of their salary actually counts so if you say that someone like Hodge is on 100k less next year than this, that's only 50k saved from the cap, if my recollection of the veteran system is right. I think also it's a bit of a fool's paradise thinking that you'll just step in and all will go smoothly. Hawthorn have been phenomenal in picking up players from other clubs but won't be long before the core of Hodge/Mitchell/Lewis hobble off into the sunset. Not to mention other key players like Rioli, Gibson, Burgoyne and Roughead. They can't avoid a rebuild forever, much as they've been supreme at putting it off in the last 5 years.

Depends on how much you love what you're doing. Does anyone really care that Brereton's last years were with Collingwood and Sydney playing pretty poor footy? He might be as likely to want to end on a full year of footy if he's got faith in his body.

I was of the thought that if hawks do win flag and multiple retirements come along, hawthorn could likey fit jenkins and hurley in same squad and the 2 mates could be together at the club which may likely bring them a flag which im sure is what theyd be after more than just the most money

Dermy actually wasn't that bad for us. He wasn't a superstar, but he was pretty useful.

Crows will pay overs and Jenkins to remain a Cow and O'Meara will be on good coin at the Saints as Rocky wont go there and will finally have a break out year if his body stays sound. Potential to be a super star.

Must have a bit of cap room left over and will take a pretty good trade to get him there. Your first round pick won't be anywhere near enough

Jenkins stays for sure. He's all through the media outlets himself, which means he reads it and he'd read his own press. The overwhelming view is he's getting great service from a midfield working with a damaging forward line and he's about the 4th fiddle forward. Go somewhere as the #1 and he'd struggle, he's also not worth $750k.
