For me, Heavy Metal is a broad term used to cover bands from Black Sabbath through to Emperor- it covers all the sub-genres, & removes the squabbling over which band belong in which sub-genre.
Ie: Black Metal fans take exception to Cradle Of Filth being labelled "Black Metal" (which their 1st album arguably was)- Cradle certainly don't fit in neatly within any 1 sub-genre, so calling them "metal" is more apt.
I personally don't consider Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple & similar "Heavy Metal" by today's standards...

i guess its hard to know what genre to catagorise bands into these days, when there are so many out there now:

metal.
hardcore.
heavy metal.
emo.
screamo.
happy hardcore.

etc etc.

its getting ridiculous.
