"Safely Remove Hardware"??

Postby GWW » Sun Jul 15, 2007 10:07 pm

On the bottom right hand side of my computer, a little icon has come up, "Safely Remove Hardware". When i click on it a box comes up with "Select the device you want to unplug or eject........"

WDC WD2500KS -00MJBO ATA Device is the "device" its asking me if i want to remove. Does anyone know what this is, and whether it would be recommended to remove it?

Any advice much appreciated.

Windows XP (I'm guessing you have XP) was released before serial ATA drives came out, and it looks like this is a serial ATA drive. It's probably installed it thinking it's USB or something similar that you could remove and put back in. If it really worries you, try to get all the windows updates from the update site, or any update that mentions serial, SATA, WD or hard drives not being detected properly or go to http://www.wdc.com and see if it's there. You could even seaerch their knowledge base and see what you can uncover.

For what it's worth, I can't imagine this actually being any problem, unless there seems to be something not working properly. The WDC site also has dowloadable tools for error checking that work well. If it doesn't bother you then I'd say just leave it and call your system eccentric.

It wasn't annoying me too much, it was just the fact my computer had slowed right down and i presumed this was the reason why. I bought a new computer (VISTA not XP) a month ago, its been good but from time to time icons appear and i have no idea why. But thanks for your comments.

I'm afraid I don't know about whether Vista will do much differently, but most of what I said will still be pretty relevant if you feel the need to do something about it.

If your system is running slow, could I ask whether you have virus and spyware protection for it? These are usually the reasons for systems slowing down.
