Trial initiative designed to allow young players greater exposure to top-level cricket

Australia’s brightest young talent will get an early taste of domestic cricket after Cricket Australia today announced a new team will compete in the Matador One-Day Cup this summer. For the first time since the ACT Comets played their final game 15 years ago, Australia’s domestic limited-overs competition will feature seven teams in a move aimed to provide an extra level of exposure and opportunity to the country’s next generation of cricketers. The introduction of a new team, called the CA XI, is a two-year trial, with the squad comprised of players from around the country who narrowly missed out on selection by their respective states.

no problem with it

but can they please change the format of the comp and stop it from being held in September in NSW, and run it alongside the Shield season

If they are introducing this composite side then sadly I think it's staying eastern states centric :(

Feck me, once again Cricket Australia messing with the fabric of Australian cricket....didn't realise that List A cricket is the same standard as the English Leagues that have County development squads in the league system.....

I think the idea has merit - although the introduction of the side makes it very difficult to change the current format, logistically would be too expensive and hard.

It's a good way to fast track players involved in the NPS fresh out of 17's/19's squads to keep them playing a better standard of cricket instead of drifting back to grade cricket for a period of time, which then in turn should hopefully make the transition to shield cricketer easier when the time comes also.

Fantastic idea

Getting young players experience at that level without having to put senior players out to pasture like has happened with the 2nd XI/Futures league.

Timing of the competition is fine. Can't fit everything in to the summer months. Something has to give and one day cricket is the least interesting/popular of the three formats so it's a no brainer.

Hopefully they make it an under 12 team so the Redbacks can notch up a win.

The timing might be good but having it all in the one region is annoying, I love the ODD games.

That's true. The climate in SA/WA could surely cope with a couple of games that early in the season. Perhaps not Vic/Tas
