Ranked 19th in the comp for contested possessions, and 22nd for tackles for an inside mid. Not fantastic numbers for a bloke signed up on a long term deal (but then again, Lobbe was hardly producing great numbers either). Not suprising when contested numbers are left to just Jones though, next best for the demons is Vince at 45 for CP.

I guess with the lack of players within the squad commanding long term/sizeable contracts, Melbourne see their skipper as someone they can build a squad around, so from the perspective of stability, its a good move.

He wouldn't command a massive deal at another club, but if he was a free agent possibility, i'd be very suprised if he didnt command significant interest. Would be a very good player in a decent side, IMO.

Starting to mix it with the big 4, have plenty of outside run but could do with some extra hardness around the ball which would free up some other players.

Would also add excellent depth which is crucial come finals in the top 4

Nah- our contested ball stocks are fine. Boak, Gray and Wines all finished in top 10, so I don't think Port have an issue with winning the ball (3rd in contested possessions behind Sydney and Hawthorn).

Would do well at the Roos though out of those 2.

You have to wonder if that shoulder injury could be the beginning of the end for Gablett. Not writing off the little champ but that's his most serious injury to date and one that can re-occur. He'll be tested off the field and fully tested on it once he returns. As for Jones, come to the Geelong Demons mate.

If you think they are going okay you must be a Glenelg supporter.

Big differance is that the majority of the guys playing ressies at the Crows are older blokes or ones who aint that good and wont get any better. The Suns ressies would be full of 1st or 2nd year kids that will improve dramatically. Throw in their concessions again this year and their squad over the coming 4-5 years will be better than most.
Id expect them to finish higher than the Crows every year for the next 4-5 years atleast

Interesting to compare how both went about setting up their initial squads, GWS stockpiled a heap of picks and it seems to be paying dividends. Suns look horrid ATM and with no Ablett they could really slide this year

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but the Suns getting the best player in the game (or ever, according to some) hasn't worked as well for all their kids as Mumford, Shaw and now Griffen probably have for the Giants.

Well the Suns had a Superdraft so were pretty lucky, but appeared to have put all their eggs in that one basket. Campbell Brown, Bock, Harbrow, Rischitelli, Krakeour etc didn't offer them anywhere near as much as those GWS blokes you've mentioend.
