The selectors have to give up this obsession with finding an allrounder. A country might be lucky to find a genuine allrounder of test quality once every ten years.

Forcing players to be something they're obviously not simply won't work.

He's lucky to be playing in this Test, when you average around 45-50 in State cricket and slected for your country and basically fail in each Innings that you play and average just under 12, you are expected to be dropped. You can excuse Jaques for today, first test, biggest crowd he's played in front of.

Symonds is looking less and less the allrounder Australia need with every passing test. Michael Clarke especially must be wondering what is going on at the moment. I have my doubts about Hodge too, despite his 200 in the last test. I reckon we've seen the best of Hodge already but Hussey is just getting started.

That's the thing, Symonds isn't an allrounder. He's a batsman (?) who rolls his arm. Seems that the selectors have been seduced by his form in the one-day game which is a barometer of sweet FA.

A fantastic effort by Andrew Symonds in the last couple of days. Where on Earth did all this come from?? It also begs the question, why wasn't he bowled in Perth?? Could he have made a difference on that flat deck??

This thread was about Symonds and his test career. While his performance in the last 2 tests were vastly improved on what he has done previously, he still has much to prove as a test match player. As a one day cricketer he has become one of if not the best player in the world at the moment.

Especially now that Watson is back in the ODI side. If Watson shows any kind of form in ODI's, and Symonds' test performances are not up to scratch then it will be curtains. No room for both of them in the side, as selectors are after a bowling all-rounder, who can chip in with the odd 60-70 here and there. Symonds so far has done this, but he will be under a lot more pressure now as Watson's bowling appears to be more suited at Test level.

Yeah but Watson falls over and it's another six months out. He could be another Bruce Reid...minus the talent.

Symonds is far from proven as a test batsman. He has the first two tests in SAF to prove himself. That innings in Melbourne proved nothing. All he had to do was swing the bat. I felt sorry for him when he recieved that disgraceful decision in Sydney though.

Doggies although symonds is the probably one of the best one day players going around at the moment, he still needs to prove himself at test level. Although the good form in cricket is good form the jury is still out until the next test series, but i do get your point about the confidence. It might be just what he needs.
