My dad wanted to name me Dawn (bleccchhhh). Mum talked him out of it because there was a brand of toilet paper called Dawn. They named me Katherine in the end - Dad says it was after Katharine Hepburn, but Mum says that's what she told Dad because she really named me after Catherine Earnshaw in Wuthering Heights. (She spelt it with a K though, because she wanted me to be Kate rather than Cathy.) She didn't think Dad would appreciate me being named after an absolute psycho. Actually, I'm not sure why MUM wanted to name me after an absolute psycho, but there you go. It's a bit of a family name too - there are a line of Kotrynas (Lithuanian version of Katherine) in my family history.

I named my kids Angus and Luke. I suggested the name both times and the fathers agreed. With Mr Ex-McSpaz, he wanted to call the baby Ian, didn't want Angus because he was American and they're big on Angus Burgers over there. It's associated far more with steak than as an actual name. However, I prevailed because I wasn't going to have my baby named Ian, for god's sake. Nothing against the name particularly, but it's of my dad's generation, not mine. I named Angus after Angus Young from AC/DC.

Luke was easy. I provided a list of names and asked Mr McSpaz to do the same. He didn't because he's a man. We narrowed it down to Luke and Michael. Then Mr McSpaz realised that he had a friend named Michael who was a jerk, and I had an ex named Michael whose head looked like an anvil. So we chose Luke simply because we liked the name. Plus it gave us a platform for Star Wars-based jokes.

Its hard naming a kid. We have always been pretty solid on a girls name but we struggled for a boys name. With our first we never committed to a name until we were driving to the hospital.
Now that we are expecting a 2nd kid, we still have the same girls name but are struggling even worse for a boys name. Probably do the same thing and finalise our 2 choices on our drive to the hospital again.

My sister's name came from the last name of one of the doctors that mum used. Although I told her that it came from a brand of vacuum cleaners......

Similar sort of thing happened, when the Mrs was getting an epidural the anaesthetist came in with a North Melb shirt (must be a good bloke )
Named our lad Archer.

Great name, if we ever had a boy we were calling him Archer.

That parents of a newborn child STILL haven't decided on a name.
Give or take, let's say you have 8 months knowing bubs is on the way. That's roughly 35 weeks. That's roughly 245 days/nights. What are these people doing that they can't find the time to make what I would've thought, a pretty bloody important decision.
I genuinely feel sorry for babies that enter the world nameless, if their parents haven't made this call with shitloads of notice, well......... good luck kid for the next 15-20 years.

Our last child was born at 27 weeks, we didn't have a name, but agreed on one by the end of the day.

Agreed. Boys are particularly difficult. When the second Pseudomite was born we had a name picked out for a girl, but had a shortlist of 4 names for a boy. Sure enough, we had a boy. The young fella was nameless for 24 hours while we debated the merits of the final four candidates.

... and I did suggest "Peter Carey Pseudo" on a whim, but the missus would not have a bar of it.

With our kids it was up to me to come up with a shortlist then their mother picked the final names from that.

Our first born I was sure would be a girl and we had picked Brooke Lucy from the start but still were tossing up 3 different boys names. 4 years later when our son came along our taste in names had changed and the name we picked for him, Tate Connor, hadn't featured the first time around. If he had been a girl he would of been called Mahni Shae.

For the older mini Jase we had only one name for a boy and one for a girl. Liam James (Grandfathers names) or Aliena Jane (Aliena is the main characters name from Pillars of the Earth, Mrs Jases favourite book). We had a boy....

Second mini Jase we knew we were going to have a boy as they thought he had Downs Syndrome after the second Ultra sound. So we new we only needed a boys name and went with Jay Michael...

If we were ever to have a girl naturally or via adoption (I have always wanted to adopt a little girl from OS) then if we could give her a name it would be either Karis Jane or Ava Jane....

i loved the whole naming process of our children...

we came up with a shortlist each of 4 first and middle names each then went to work with deciding from there. took a few weeks though to settle properly and even then we constantly debated after the final decision. Mrs NG on both occasions second guessed the name after they were born, but i stuck to my guns and its all done and dusted now.

came up with Abigail Leila round 1 then Nicholas Henri round two

with our first our girls name was probably settled before i met my missus ... My daughter is named after my wifes nanna. Ruby May.... However i reckon we didn't decide on a boys name til probably a week before the birth...
At least this time round we have settled on both names...

I am pretty fussy with names, not sure why though as I tend to be pretty easy going with most things..

Once my wife and I found out we were expecting a boy, we settled on a name almost straight away.

When the time comes for round 2, particularly if its a girl, there will be a few battles i think
