The real joke (and tragedy) is the culture of buying votes by making expansive promises to gullible voters who think the deficit can be expended indefinitely to pay for them, and a system where you have to do that to win the marginal seats.

Unfortunately, it means no politicians think past winning the next election, and so we have a totally oppositional system, rather than one in which all groups could work toward reaching consensus on a rational balance of development and debt.

This old boy is usually up till near midnight, or after, but have more desirable and interesting things to do after about 7pm most nights...

I tend to be on the computer while I have a leisurely breakfast and read the news, and in the evenings around 5pm till 6.30ish, and occasionally check in here during the day if I happen to be home and need to look something up.

I'm exchanging emails about a local job I'm negotiating at present - and amusing myself here in the time lags.
The hospital service wanted someone to work 8am till 4pm but we've agreed on 10am till 5pm to suit me.
Now we are discussing whether the pay is enough for me to get out of bed for...

There is hope for you.

An engineer mate of mine (Civil) worked in SA for a while then took a job with a London firm.
Later he started his own business in London and more recently sold out to a German firm.

Now he has a house in Grange, and one near Oxford, and lives in endless Summer.
He works as a consultant for his old firm when in the UK, from home via the Internet.

It is good to be in a field where there is a shortage of experienced people.

My (not excessive ) pay requirements have been approved.
So I'll stay in SA working part-time until July 1st, because that suits me for now.

There is a full time for 7 weeks job on offer in Qld which I'm prepared to take from July7th.
(Unless they can find someone else who is prepared to go there in mid-June which they would like.)

Time for lunch now.

It hasn't changed over the years then.
I knew a guy with a Ph D in Nuclear Physics who was in defence science at the time and had done an MA and Dip Ed on the side to enhance his job prospects.
His daughter, whom I was going out with while she was in OZ on holiday, said, "Dad I've been asked to let you know there are unlimited grants in your field available at home in Israel."

He departed a month after she did. (It was about 1975.)
