The recently completed 3rd Test in England contained the 2nd highest number of extras in a Test match:

England 1st innings - (b 15, lb 8, wd 6, nb 18) - 47
W.Indies 1st innings - (b 20, lb 10, wd 9, nb 3) - 42
England 2nd innings - (b 2, lb 6, wd 6, nb 12, pen 5) - 31
W.Indies 2nd innings - (b 14, lb 21, wd 8, nb 4) - 47
Totals - (byes 51, leg byes 45, wides 29, no balls 37, penalties 5) - 167

This is 10 short of the record, which is 177 (byes 37, leg byes 31, wides 2, no balls 103) set between West Indies and Pakistan at Georgetown in 1976-77.

The 5 penatly runs occured on the 5th ball in the 5th over of the English 2nd innings when the ball struck a West Indies helmet on the ground.

Interesting Stats. Looking at them, the No-Balls are about Normal as per over the Years. Wides in the last year or two are far more Prevalent these days as Umpires have been stricter with them and Rightfully so to as for years bowlers got away with too much. BYES.....WTF? What are the Keepers doing these Days???? GEEZ, Go back through the records of HEALY, MARSH, KNOTT etc, Rarely they would concede a Bye let alone the HUGE Numbers that occurred in this Test. I Suppose With the Leg Byes, Improvement in Protective Gear Has Increased the Number i.e. Ball Richocheting off Helmets, More Rigid Pads and Thigh Pads etc, also combined with the Pissy Short Straight Boundries on most grounds see a lot of Balls reach the Boundry even off Gentle Spin bowlers.

for Englands sake as a credible cricket team I hope they pick Chris Read....

i was waitinmg for someone to start bagging prior for the bye tally, you could have had 2 keepers and most of them wouldnt have been stopped as harmison and plunkett bowled a heap of ball down the legside that prior had no chance of getting too.

prior has done a good job and certainly gives the side a much better balance and means that teh batsmen batting 5 or 6 can actually get some runs as the number 11s dont start at 7

Sorry May-z just watching the highlights now and Prior leg-side work is disgraceful, doesn't not move his feet well and fails to pick up the line of the ball, one ball down legside he simply has not moved, just stuck a hand out. He may not have got it if he did actually move but the fact he didn't shows two things - one he doesn't have a test match keepers eye to pick up the line and 2, he is lazy....

As a hack 'keeper in country cricket I am disgusted if I don't move legside. That sort of stuff is an elementry mistake I would hate to see at grade level let alone test level.

I was prepasred to give this bloke a go waching teh first test but watching the highlights now this bloke is appearing to be more and morea dud in the G Jones mould. The sad thing is he has made runs agaisnt a much inferior attack that Read had to face last summer so he has had a chance to score test match runs that Read hasn't ahd since he worked on his batting.

Agreed but the technical faults demonstrated by Prior would have prevented some of them - the leg-side catch of Sidebottom he dropped should have been caught but the lack of footwork and ability to pick the line prevented that....

leg side catches off a leftarmer aren't that hard because once you see the line of the ball on leg stump you know where it is going - unless he has rolled the fingers over it for the cutter - down leg side you go - have snared a couple of beauties over the years down leg side off left armers (have also missed of few too when lazy)
