To be honest, I hope Hawks get up because if Freo win, I can see footy turning to absolute shit next year with teams trying to replicate their boring unwatchable game style. If Hawks do lose though, I'll have a wry smile on my face for daisy

I want Freo to win. And I hope Crowley does a good tagging job, just to annoy anyone thats bitching about "tagging not being a part of Aussie Rules Footy". Has and always will be. Its up to the tagged player to keep his mind on the ball. If a little niggle takes your mind off the game, you should give back all the money you're paid to be a professional.

I hope Crowley plays a good game and there is definatly a place for taggers in Aussies rules.

BUT

If he wants to run around pinching people I have no issue with a Luke hodge running through him elbow high, pinching has never been part of Aussie rules

On Crowley, I think people who say "he wouldn't have been able to do that 20 years ago, he'd have sorted them out", forget that 20 years ago, he'd probably be hitting blokes first rather than pinching them.

For mine, anyone who has the intestinal fortitude to be a tagger, because they know at some point they're going to gain attention from team-mates trying to break the tag, is mentally strong enough to cop a belting and get back up and give one back. I don't think they're cowards.

Exactly. In my view, and experience, taggers cop a lot more than the actual "victim" of the tag. Most of the time, the tagger is going it alone, whereas the player being tagged usually has support of his team mates, putting on blocks, getting in his face, etc.

Also, not so much at AFL level, but in the lower leagues, its not uncommon for the tagged player to drag his man away from the ball and umpire and belt him where no one will see it. You have to be tough, and very focused to be an effective tagger.

Not only does Crowley cope with the attention mentioned above, he also manages to run with the best midfielders while yapping non-stop all bloody day!

Ablett made comments about talking to Steve Johnson about Crowley and how they were both surprised how much he talks to them, pretty much tries to engage them in a conversation. Very clever, tries to get them thinking about things other than their job.

When I heard crowley speak for the first time in length during a post match interview a month or so back he certainly didn't sound like what I expected.

Agree with all that, he is obviously very gifted with the lip and definatly distracts his opponent

But pinching!!! u wanna run around a mans game pinching people u deserve whatever comes your way whether its fair or not.

Worse part about a bloke like Crowley is u can guarentee he would never pinch Barry Hall 50m of the play.

I would love to see him have a crack and a pinch at Guerra, Sewell or Hodge at some stage.

Little nippy pinches are ok in my book. Its the same principle as tugging the jumper every now and then. It gets into the other guys head. They start to lose their cool and are only thinking about punching your lights out. Its up to that player to play through it and stay focused.

When I used to tag, my train of thought was "if you dont get punched, you didnt do your job properly". I get punched a fair bit. Probably explains my dull personality.

I think the negative thoughts on taggers come from people that have either been tagged, or never had to tag. Its a tough gig.

Why would he? The job's to negate the guy, not be lights out. He's much more valuable to his team with his eyes open.
I'm sure if he was on a bloke like Hall, he'd have other ways into his head.

I am with you there. I sometimes think that the TV coverage make Sydney and Fremantle look bad and boring on TV. The camera is too tight on the ball sometimes and you can't see the work the rest of the team is doing to shut down their opponent. It can be fantastic to watch live, awesome work rate and pure belief in your team mate do do his job

Reminds me recently with NBA basketball when Gary Payton was inducted into the HoF he shocked a lot of people by saying John Stockton was the hardest player he ever had to guard, when most would obviously assume it would've been Jordan. Payton aside from being a great player was a tenacious one on one defender and he said the reason being everyone else he could to some degree get inside their head (Payton was a notorious trash talker) but never with Stockton. Every now and then Jordan might spray him back or punch him behind play but he said no matter what he said or did Stockton never said a word back, kept doing what he was doing and acted like Payton didn't exist.

Moral of the story? Every tagger/defender no matter the sport wants to get inside your head, don't acknowledge them in any way and ignore them as much as you can.

I enjoyed Freo's game last week, tough & hard at the ball & opposition. They had Sydney running scared.
